Hi, I'm Richard. I have been helping students as a tutor for over thirty years in subjects as different as accounting and chemistry. My philosophy of tutoring, and teaching in general, is that the student should always be in the process of learning TWO things: the subject at hand, of course, but even more importantly he or she should be learning how best to approach new and unfamiliar material. What makes tutoring an ideal environment in which to learn is that I can help you see what ways of thinking you have that can be a great help in grasping new subjects. Effective teaching and effective learning are always a COLLABORATIVE effort.
I have made a lifetime of learning. Having earned three master's degrees and working on a doctoral degree, all in different fields, I have become very aware of the importance of approaching material in a way that minimizes the anxiety of what may seem an overwhelming task. This involves learning how to strategize learning. Let me be your guide and companion in your next academic journey and you will find the trip far easier and more pleasant than you imagined! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am an economic historian and am currently working on a number of papers for presentation at conferences. I am equally familiar with American and global history.
I have taught chemistry privately and in college for over thirty years and have BS and MS degrees in the subject, as well as R&D experience.
I earned a master's degree in both organic and physical chemistry from NYU in 1983, and worked as a synthetic organic chemist for CIBA-GEIGY in the 1980s.
