Then, of course, each individual student has strengths and weaknesses. I believe that as a teacher/tutor it is important to come into a teaching position, ready to address those challenges and motivate/encourage the student through and beyond these challenges. My relationships with my students are positive, I believe that that is fundamental for learning to occur.
My strength and interest is English grammar and pronunciation, I am also skilled at assisting students in organizing and writing essays. The majority of my teaching experience is with English Language Learners however I believe my skills, particularly teaching grammar and essay writing are particularly well suited for native speakers at the middle-high school level. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I teach with an emphasis on grammar and encouraging improvements in pronunciation. I am particularly skilled at motivating students to see grammar as a tool and a guideline rather than a challenge or impediment to their advancement in the language.
If you need assistance in organizing/writing essays or in proofreading your own essays, our lessons can be used in this way as well. If you are looking for writing practice, we can use prompts to motivate you to explore your own unique ideas and writing skills.
My skills are suited towards English Language Learners but also lend themselves to teaching even native speakers the grammar they unwittingly are using and how their speech and writing should be bound to certain conventions. Even slang is bound by certain rules and conventions, and I will encourage poetic license at opportune times! The grammar that I teach to native speakers would be suitable for the middle school to high school level and can even support the student's desire to learn another language. In my teaching experience I have consistently found that knowledge of one's own native language very often parlays itself to an increased ability and facility when learning a new language. My teaching approach could certainly lend itself to preparation of native English speakers to learn a language other than English.
I am particularly strong at helping students achieve better organization of their essays and providing ideas for generating topics on which to write, or ways of approaching writing assignments. I am not qualified in assisting with research papers.
