I have been tutoring since the 7th Grade. I started with tutoring 3rd graders in Math. Then in High School, I tutored classmates mostly in Biology and History. In College, I was a peer Biology tutor from Sophomore Year until I graduated in May of 2009. In graduate school, in which I earned a Masters of Science Degree in Clinical Research, I tutored my classmates in Bioethics, Biostatistics, SPSS and SAS.
I find that what works best for me when tutoring is one on one sessions with students. This way, the student has my undivided attention for the time I am with them. I generally start a session by asking the student what they need help with. We can then focus on only the problem areas and not get stuck on a topic they already understand. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I took the ACT English exam 10 years ago as a High School Junior. I scored well on this exam, and actually did better on it than the SAT Verbal exam. I may have been a Biology Major in College, but all of my professors were impressed at how well I wrote papers and lab reports.
I took Graduate Level Biostatistics for my Master's Program at NYU Fall 2010 and Spring 2011. I got B+ in both classes. In graduate school, in which I earned a Master of Science Degree in Clinical Research, I tutored my classmates in Bioethics, Biostatistics, SPSS and SAS.
I took the AP Euro exam in my senior year of high school and got a 4. As a result, I did not need to take it in college. I may have been a Biology major in college, but I have always been interested in European History. Some of my favorite books to read are historical fiction and historical mysteries.
I took PathoPhysiology as a College Junior and earned an A-. I took Anatomy and Physiology as a High school Senior and earned an A. I spent one and half years shadowing a Hematologist/Oncologist in his Lymphoma Clinic so the subject is fresh in my mind.
I took Honor's Psychology in Freshman year of College and Intro to Psychology in Senior year of High School. I received an A- in both classes.
In college I helped get two different articles get published. One was published in Blood and the other in ASCO. I personally worked on the data tables and writing the introduction section. In graduate school I worked as a research assistant for a clinical nutritionist. I got the data tables ready for three of her articles and also wrote literature summaries for ten of her projects.
