I am an assistant professor of chemistry at a nationally ranked New York university and teach Organic Chemistry. Prior to this, I spent 16+ years in the pharmaceutical industry. Greater than 90% of my students are pre-med, pre-dent, or pre-vet candidates and almost universally, they have remarked how well trained they are for the Organic Chemistry section of their admissions exam. Students have repeatedly commended me for my patience and helpfulness, and how available I am to answer their questions. My teaching method for Organic Chemistry relies on teaching fundamental principles that allow my students to understand how and why molecules react the way they do, so that memorization is minimized. Memorization, in addition to being short-term, stores information as isolated facts. This is not very helpful when students are asked questions that require multi-concept answers. By understanding principles, students learn to pull different concepts together and are better equipped to answer complex questions. Students learn to rely on their knowledge base to elucidate answers on their own, rather than searching through a catalog of seemingly unrelated concepts and reactions.
In order for me to best serve you, I would appreciate being given a copy of your syllabus and the title of your textbook. In addition, I would greatly appreciate a list of questions or topics you wish to review IN ADVANCE. This will allow me to come to our session prepared to answer your questions with some notes and problems. The more advanced notice I am given, the better I am able to help you. Typically two days is more than enough time.
Lastly, although I am willing to travel to meet students, I already drive a great distance every day to get to my office, so for convenience and my own sanity, I typically travel only to students that are on my way home – most students meet me on campus.

Martin's an absolutely wonderful investment if you're taking organic chemistry and need alternate explanations or help. My professor's explanations of the (very difficult) material are not always very helpful to me, personally, but Martin speaks my language when it comes to explaining tough concepts in Orgo.
He's such a nice person, really patient, and very encouraging of what you can do (which I think is important in a tutor/professor of a difficult and intimidating subject in which it's easy to feel discouraged). He takes tough concepts and breaks them down in a way that anyone can understand - leaving jargon and other intimidating and mystifying explanations at the door - which is so refreshing in such a high-level science. He is also incredibly responsive and helpful in providing extra material, as well as tailoring your sessions to your specific needs.
My first lesson with Martin was confidence-boosting. He knows how to explain concepts clearly and answer questions fully. He is an expert in the subject and teaches it effectively. It is also very clear that he enjoys teaching and cares about my success. Overall he is a great Tutor.
Martin reviewed synthesis problems with me for two hours. I finally understand these questions. He is very patient and understanding.
I was panicking about my Orgo 2 final and Martin was able to meet with me on very short notice. I'm sure that I would have scored at least 20 points lower on my exam had we not met. He clearly knows his stuff and he does a great job of highlighting major points, showing helpful tricks, and identifying potential student pitfalls. It's amazing what was accomplished in 2.5 hours. I should have been tutored by him all semester! At Martin's rate, he is a steal.
Martin D. is the perfect tutor for explaining complicated processes in simpler terms. After lessons with Martin I feel that I have grasped the true meaning and reasoning for a problem rather than just learning "how" to do it.
I understood material explained by him for 2 hours which I couldn't understand for 1 semester. It's bad I didn't find him earlier.
I am taking a Phd Bioorganic course, and Martin was the perfect tutor to help me with the problems that I was having. He is very patient and organized throughout the session, and his studying tips were very useful. I would highly recommend him.
Martin is an excellent organic chemistry tutor. One of the reasons I found the tutoring sessions helpful is because Martin is able to break down difficult information so that the topic is easier to understand. In the beginning of the course, I had trouble drawing resonance structures and identifying Lewis acid and bases. For our first lesson, Martin had notes ready for me and explained the topic clearly. By the end of the session, I was able to solve questions by myself. Martin is also very patient. When I didn’t understand a certain problem, Martin showed me how to approach the problem with a step by step explanation. He would give me similar problems until he saw that I fully understood the topic. Consequently, I would highly recommend Martin.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a BS, MS, and PhD in Organic Chemistry and spent more than 16 years as a synthetic medicinal chemist in a major pharmaceutical company. Recently I returned to academia and am currently an assistant professor at a nationally ranked New York university. I am a patient teacher and stress understanding the basic principles of Organic Chemistry in order to answer complex questions (as opposed to relying exclusively on memorization). I have been commended repeatedly by my students for my teaching ability.
