About Laura

I am a reliable and effective writing tutor. I studied journalism in college, and I worked in the publishing industry for several years. Words, language and the writing process have been an important part of my life, and my ability to use them wisely has afforded me opportunities I wouldn't have gotten otherwise. I want to help others master their writing as well because I know from personal experience how much of a difference good writing can make.

My process depends greatly on the needs of the individual student, but with essay help, I like to be involved from the start of the process -- I help focus ideas, clarify goals and guide structure. I do not rewrite: I advise on what should be rewritten and why, but my students are responsible for solving their own writing errors. Writing is a process, and learning to revise is the most important part. I teach with patience and humor.

I've spent over three years in the publishing industry: first at a boutique editing firm in Cambridge, and then at a higher education textbook publisher where I worked with freshman composition textbooks. Before publishing, I spent two years writing for various online and print publications, including European Vibe magazine. Most of my tutoring experience comes from helping peers in college, but I've done homework help with kids ages 5-15, and I've worked closely with ESL students to help with vocabulary and essay development.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I work for a humanities higher education textbook publishers where I help develop Composition and Literature textbooks for college students. I work closely with some of the most premier English professors in the country and am invested in learning about all of the ways teaching and learning English is changing.

I am an editor by nature: eager to correct comma splices, run-ons, fragments and misuses of "you're," "your," "there," "their," "they're," "its" and "it's," even with relatives. My journalism background and my publishing experience have only strengthened my already strong fascination with both the sense and nonsense of the English language.

I can help students identify themes, symbolism and allegory, as well as clarify character relationships, roles, and archetypes. My goal is to deepen the student's ability to see beyond the plot, identify the use of language and analyze the author's intent and the historical context of the literature.

I provide thorough and thoughtful reading for fluency, organization, sentence structure, syntax, word choice, and grammar and spelling errors.

I work with students to build their vocabulary using age-appropriate readings, and from there build lists of words to define, derive, find the origins of and use.

As a trained journalist, a published creative writer, a marketing and publishing professional and an academic, I am well-versed in a variety of genres. My editing experience allows me to see and help you capitalize on your writing strengths, and my professional writing experience allows me to understand and help fortify any weaker points.
