About Angela

I have been retired from the New York City Department of Education for two years. I worked with special needs children for 30 years in District 75. Their ages range from 4.9 years through 14 years. The children varied from learning disabled emotional/behavioral challenges, children with autism and children with multiple challenges. It is important to work with related service providers, the teachers, parents and student to get a picture of the child and her/his individual needs. I have a strong background working with small groups aw well as one on one. Tapping into the child's interest, the arts, science and sports, helps to motivate the child to learn and succeed. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I am a retired special needs educator with 30 years of experience. I have worked with students who have been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD, ages 4.9 to 14 years. I also was a Crisis Intervention/Dean of the elementary/middle school and at the high school level.

Autism

I worked with children with autism from the start of my career as an Educator of Special needs children. During many training workshops at the school site, we were shown tools to better serve our children. District 75, New York City Department of Education, gave citywide staff development days addressing new developments, studies and hands-on experiences to work with children of autism. I taught dance and movement to stimulate and engage our children. Children of special needs enjoy the arts in some form, it's our job to bring out their talents.

Elementary (K-6th)

I taught for 30 years for the NYC Department of Education. The children ranged in grades Pre-K through 12th. Their struggles with school developed due to their emotional, behavioral or physical challenges. I retired 5 years ago and now tutor. I have tutored children in grades K-H.S. in reading, math, social studies and science, giving them the necessary tools and study skills to help them achieve their goals, working one-on-one is best way for the tutor to assess and plan the best possible plan for the child. Looking at the child's texts, notebooks, reports and talking with the child gives me a full look of the child. Talking with parent(s) and caregivers rounds out the assessment.

Reading

I retired from New York City Board of Education after 30 years. I taught children with Special Needs from 4.9 years through H.S. I work together with each family to see what the child's strengths and weaknesses and come up with goals, assessing as we go along.

Special Needs

I am a retired special needs educator. I have worked for over 30 years with children with special needs: emotionally/behaviorally, ADD/ADHD, and autism. The ages ranged from 4.9 months through middle school. I taught all subject areas including art and dance/movement. I was a crisis intervention educator/dean.
