Bennington College (Literature)
Brown University (Master's)
For the past four years, I have taught a 3-week intensive class at Brown University's Summer Program. In this course, I helped students gain a firmer grasp on grammar, sharper revision skills, and a greater command of language. It was a great pleasure to see the leaps and bounds my students made in their speed, strength, and authority as writers.
Before arriving at Brown, I worked for a number of years as a proofreader, copyeditor and fact-checker at dozens of publishing and advertising firms throughout Manhattan. I have done freelance editing work for Scholastic, J. Crew, Allworth Press, Black Enterprise magazine, and Early Childhood Today. My fiction has been published in many literary journals; one of my stories was nominated for a Pushcart Prize.
As a tutor, I work hard at tailoring my instruction to whatever area the student needs the most assistance in. I believe in giving as much positive reinforcement as possible; guiding a student toward finding their own voice and individual style is one of the great rewards of teaching. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have an MFA from Brown University, and I have taught over a dozen writing courses for Brown's Continuing Studies and Pre-College program. I have helped many students (both adults and teenagers) with their admission essays for undergraduate and graduate programs. I've thoroughly reviewed their writing and given them specific tips as to how to edit and tailor their personal statements, while making sure they maintain their point of view and individual writing style. Though we may go through various drafts together, it's always a pleasure to hear, months later, that they've gained admittance to the school of their choice.

I have an MFA from Brown University, a strong editorial background, and am fluent in both AP style and Words Into Type. I am comfortable working with MS Word (track changes) and Adobe Acrobat/InDesign. I am quick, efficient, and highly skilled at spotting typographical errors, consistency and formatting issues, and dropped text. I've proofread (both digitally and in print): essays, personal statements, websites, and highly technical journals and texts.
I am member of the stage actor's theater union (EQUITY), and film and television union as well (SAG/AFTRA), and have worked Off-Broadway and in film and television. I have a master's degree from Brown University. I have trained at the Uta Hagen Studio in Manhattan, and at the Paradise Theater as well.
