About Clare

Dear Parents and Students,

I am able to offer you a sincere and motivated commitment, experience working with children, a strong work ethic and life experience.

Currently I am employed full-time as a special education teacher in a middle school in the Bronx. For the past six years I have been the resource room teacher for the 7th and 8th grade classes, providing instructional support both in the classroom as well as in a separate small group setting. I facilitate learning, which includes help with organization and study skills as well as alternative and detailed explanation, modeling, guidance and practice to enhance comprehension in all subjects. This year I am also teaching a Wilson Reading Program, specifically, Just Words, to three 7th and 8th grade classes.

Previously I was the special education teacher in a collaborative 6th grade class with prime responsibility for English Language Arts and Social Studies lesson planning. Prior to that I taught a bridge 6th/7th grade self-contained class of children with emotional disturbances for several years.

It was always my desire to make a positive difference in the lives of children. Therefore, I started a career in social work, helping children who had been placed in the foster care system. As a social worker I was always empathetic and understanding.

Last, but certainly not least, I am the mother of two children, one a college graduate and the other a high school student. I know how important it is to us, as parents, to make sure our children are properly equipped and prepared to meet the challenges of this world.

Hoping to hear from you soon.

Sincerely,
Clare

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

Master's certification in special education PreK-12th grade.
9 years' experience with NYCBOE teaching middle school (6th-8th grade) special education students including students with ADD & ADHD.
Lessons are formulated to include differentiated instruction and various learning styles as well as to encourage positive reinforcement of individual and individual responsibility for learning and future direction by helping motivate and empower children to take control of their own learning and improve their behavior with specific goals. I have created different behavioral plans, involving the students in the process, using peer 'tutoring' for positive behavior as well as for academic progress. I have also involved parents, emphasizing their children's positive attributes as well as their future possibilities, using the same positive reinforcement I use daily, in class, with the children. My hope is that we can help children understand themselves and learn how best to empower themselves to become the productive, caring members of society they are meant to be.

Autism

I have taken special education graduate courses that included learning about autism, how it is diagnosed and how to work with students who have have received an autism diagnoses. During the past 10 years of teaching I have worked with several students who have been diagnosed by a physician with autism and with several students who may be autistic but have never been diagnosed for several reasons. I have also become self-educated, reading books, technical and biographical, as well as many articles that deal with autism. Finally, I believe I possess the temperament necessary to help autistic children learn to navigate the requirements of our educational system as well as the community outside.

Elementary (K-6th)

Master's degree and certification in elementary education to teach students from Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten and 1st-6th grade.
After student teaching in a 1st grade and a 6th grade special education class I started teaching in a NYC middle school special education class, specifically, a 6th/7th grade self-contained class of children with emotional disturbances. I developed the entire curriculum, which I devised using the results of initial formal testing in reading and math as well as my informal observation of individual skills. Subsequently, I became the 6th grade special education co-teacher in a regular education class with prime responsibility for English Language Arts and Social Studies lesson planning. For over 5 years I have been the SETSS (resource room) teacher for the 7th and 8th grade classes, providing instructional support both in the regular education classroom as well as in a separate small group setting. I facilitate learning, which includes alternative and detailed explanation, modeling, guidance and practice to enhance comprehension in all subjects as well as help with organization and study skills.

Elementary Math

Masters Certification in Elementary Education, including Elementary Math. As a Special Education Resource Room teacher for several years I help students in the area of foundation skills in math, including the following: addition, subtraction, multiplication & division operations, mixed operations, comparing & ordering numbers, patterns, place value, fractions, properties, probability & statistics, data & graphs, estimation & rounding, geometry, money, measurement, etc.

Special Needs

Master's degree and certification in special education to teach Pre-school - 12th grade.
9 years' teaching experience with special needs children.
For the past 9 years I have been working as a special education teacher in a NYC middle school setting. I started as the special education teacher responsible for a bridge 6th/7th grade self-contained class of children with emotional disturbances. I developed the entire curriculum, which I devised using the results of initial formal testing in reading and math as well as my informal observation of individual skills. I created individual behavioral plans, involving the students in the process, using peer 'tutoring' for positive behavior as well as for academic progress. I also involved parents, emphasizing their children's positive attributes as well as their future possibilities, using the positive reinforcement I used daily, in class, with the children. Several of my students obtained higher scores on the NYS Math and English Assessment Tests, surpassing even their own expectations.
Subsequently, I was the special education co-teacher, in a regular education class of 30 students, with prime responsibility for English Language Arts and Social Studies lesson planning. Lessons were formulated to include differentiated instruction and various learning styles as well as to encourage positive reinforcement of individual and group learning strategies. Cultural diversity and character building were integrated into my lessons as I truly believe that ignorance is the prime breeder of prejudice and hate. I emphasized individual responsibility for learning and future direction by helping motivate and empower children to take control of their learning and improve their behavior with specific goals.
It have always been my desire to make a positive difference in the lives of children. Therefore I started a career in social work, helping children who had been placed in the foster care system. As a social worker, I was always empathetic and understanding, traits that have easily transferred to the teaching profession.
