About Jennet

Certifications: Reading Teacher, ESL/TESOL, Early Childhood Education, K-6 Education.
What do you love about learning? I love new thoughts, information, and getting to know a subject. I love writing and reading and expressing myself with drama. You can use all of these things both to learn and to teach.

My teaching started in Colorado, where I taught math to all grades, from Kindergarten to 5th grade. In later years I've taught English, Science (favorite!), poetry and drama. My specialty was helping students of other languages get better in English, and get better grades. I've also been a children's librarian, and really love story-telling. Recently I returned to college and got a M.Ed. as a Reading Specialist. Reading is a great way to enjoy yourself and to learn independently, and it has always been my way to explore.

My studies in literacy learning have turned me into an even better teacher! Research has revealed a lot about students' readiness for different stages, according to their ages. Understanding these developmental steps is vital for a teacher to help and challenge a student, without creating a bad or hopeless attitude about the subject by false expectations.

I've always been excellent at writing and grammar, but now understand much more about writing and reading from a student's point of view. Many students can read, but do not get deeply engaged in reading, or take pleasure from it. A way to draw more understanding and enjoyment from reading is to talk about it, think aloud, and create drama about the topic.

I am interested in meeting your student and finding out if we hit it off.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drawing

I have been incorporating art into my lessons since starting to teach. Drawing is my hobby. My best skill is line drawing, capturing an image from sight or copying it. "Real" artists have looked at my quick sketches and said... "that's really good." I love teaching students to draw whether they think they have any talent or not. You must start from where you are!!! You look at your subject, feel it (if possible), and then pick your medium -- the best way to express it. Pencil? Charcoal? You can start from the inside and make its form, or start with an outline... there are different approaches.

Handwriting

Have taught Kindergarten, third grade, and 6th grade. Handwriting is important in every grade. Have "Handwriting without Tears" kit for K-2. Enjoy teaching both cursive, print, and calligraphy.

Literature

Analysis and appreciation of literature starts with being read to, and continues throughout a person's reading life. My special areas are children's and YA lit, as well as personal study of the plays and books of Shakespeare, Steinbeck, Dickens, and Twain.

K-6 teaching license, K-12 ESL license, M.Ed. Reading Specialist.

Writing

K-6 teaching license, K-12 ESL license, M.Ed. Reading Specialist.
In my graduate school, my teachers consistently reflected on my excellent writing. (I believe they are very used to dealing with sub-par written work.) My only defect is the over-use of commas!
This doesn't guarantee that I will be a good teacher of writing. All I can say is that my students improve, and I support students' creativity as well as their grammar, spelling, organization, and voice.
