In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. I received my master's of science in teaching (childhood education, grades 1-6) from SUNY Cortland on May 20th, 2011. I have student taught for 8 weeks in a rural, high needs, second grade classroom. I have also student taught in an urban, high needs, fifth grade classroom. I currently substitute teacher in every grade and subject at several schools in Broome County.
