For the past 10 years, I have been learning and working within the deaf community in several capacities. I hold a Bachelors degree in Deaf studies with a concentration in Human Services, as well as a MS ed. in Mental Health Counseling. Currently, I am a therapist for the deaf at Lexington Center for the Deaf, providing individual and group therapy in American Sign Language. Prior now, I worked at Hunter college where I provide counseling entirely in ASL, as well as provide workshops for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities. With my fluency in sign language and knowledge of the deaf community, I have been able to job coach, interpret, and tutor various age levels within the community.
I was a personal tutor for 4 years for a family with a deaf child, where I tutored the family in ASL, as well as help expand the vocabulary and grammar structure, as well as all facets of sign language for their Deaf daughter. I have worked since than with various students of all levels and ages. I attend Deaf events regularly, and have been immersed in the language and culture since learning the language many years ago. I am also currently in the process of completing my interpreting certification as well. ASL is my passion and I would love to spread my knowledge and deaf awareness to all. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As a dancer of 21 years, I have worked with various age levels within the art. I danced throughout Long Island and Manhattan, both competitively and as a performer. I have been in several full length ballets including: Nutcracker, Swan Lake, and Snow Maiden. I have performed variations from: Sleeping Beauty, La Bayadere, Giselle, amongst others.
Currently, I am a competitive ballroom dancer at the silver level, in both pro/am and am/am. I have rigorous training in Fox Trot, Tango, Viennese Waltz, and Waltz, as well as: mambo, balero, rumba, salsa, cha cha, swing, and hustle.
As the current coordinator of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing program at a college, I work with reading audiograms daily, as well as provide counseling students to all hard of hearing students. I assist students with academic struggles, personal issues, as well as vocational work. My degrees are in both Deaf studies and Mental Health counseling, so I have a vast knowledge and education in working with students with disabilities. I am fluent in sign language and coordinator all interpreting services, as well as provide interpreting services as a job coach and for students.
I have have ten years of in-depth immersion into the Deaf community. I have tutored several families, as well as coworkers in ASL and deaf awareness. I have a BS degree in Deaf Studies, as well as a MS ed in Mental Health Counseling. Currently, as a counselor for the deaf at a college, I provide both services completely in ASL for my deaf students. I provide workshops as well as individually counseling. I also was the personal tutor for a family for four years, while obtaining my graduate degree.
