Thank you for taking the time to read this about myself. My name is Derrick Davis and I am currently a high school math and computer science teacher in a title I school in the Hudson Valley. Within my seven years of teaching I have taught elementary and middle school mathematics in an elite charter school network in NYC and I currently teach AP Calculus AB, Geometry and Computer Science for a high school in the Hudson Valley. I also teach Business Calculus part time at the local community college. What I truly value in teaching isn't giving students a "how to" guide to solving specific problems, but more so giving students thinking strategies and tools to solve problems that involve mathematics. I truly believe that mathematics is about thinking rather than doing, and although it is difficult and sometimes frustrating for students, once they think through a problem on their own the learning means something to them. I have a variety of materials I can offer any potential students and references if requested. I am personable, understanding and an expert in most branches of mathematics.

As a teacher with the range of experience that I have, I am able to pinpoint more exactly what a student needs in order to be successful within their given mathematics course. It is astonishing how most people's struggles in Algebra stems from a concept not fully understood years ago in elementary school. Having been in both primary and secondary classrooms, I have the ability to see where the cognitive disconnect occurs and provide resources and supports to help alleviate said disconnect.

If my profile and experience sounds like an excellent fit for you, please feel free to reach out to set up an initial appointment.

Elementary Math

As a teacher with less than 10 years experience, I have had the honor of teaching a wide variety of courses. One job title I held early in my career was an Elementary Mathematics Specialist for fifth grade. As a math specialist, it was my job to push into the three fifth grade classrooms and provide math instruction aligned to Common Core for 90 minutes daily. Within those 90 minutes, a minimum of 30 minutes was spent in intervention stations. Within these stations, students who struggled with previous mathematical concepts were given the mathematical support to be successful in fifth grade and beyond.

As a high school Calculus teacher, I need to be an expert on all mathematics courses students have taken over their secondary education. With Algebra I being the foundational course of all of high school math, it is critical that any high school teachers are well versed in the instruction and concepts discussed in Algebra I.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

As a teacher with less than 10 years experience, I have had the privilege of teaching a variety of courses. I have taught almost every math course from 5th grade math through to AP and College Calculus. Although I do not have explicit experience teaching Algebra II, I do have experience tutoring students in the content area. Additionally, being a calculus teacher, I must be able to explain and communicate a variety of previous concepts that students may still struggle with.

As a teacher with less than 10 years experience in the classroom, I have had the privilege of teaching a wide array of courses. I have taught everything from fifth grade math through to AP Calculus AB and Calculus I at a local Community College. As a Calculus teacher, I have honed my skills to teach the theory surrounding the concepts involved in calculus rather than simply using calculus to solve problems. Although the physical applications of calculus demonstrates its true power, the concepts and the body of knowledge surrounding calculus is truly a joy to experience. I wish to share that joy with all of my students, especially my mathematically motivated students.
Geometry

Geometry

For the past three years I have been teaching Common Core Geometry in a title I school in an urban community in the Hudson Valley. In those years, I have developed my own curriculum which has proven to be highly effective at generating students that are proficient in geometry. Within a school district that typically has ~20% pass rate on the state's Regents Exams, I have boasted a ~70% pass rate the past three years. As a geometry teacher, I focus on giving students tools and reasoning skills to solve problems rather than formulas and algorithms to remember. I allow students to productively struggle through material so that they achieve mastery on their own, which deepens learning and allows students to transfer their knowledge and reasoning skills into other disciplines.

Amazing tutor!

Derrick tutored my son Ryan for the NYS Algebra Regents. After only one week and a total of approx. 8 hours of tutoring sessions my son raised his grade 20 points. The way Derrick broke down the math sections was very methodical which made it easier for my son to grasp the material much easier per day.
