"Great Tutor!"

- Nicole, Farmingville, NY on 6/28/13
Mark replied on 6/28/2013

The course was "difficult for my tutor" only because some of the problems were what I would call unusual applications (i.e., applications not discussed in a typical Calculus course). The course (offered by the University of Massachusetts) was taught in a nontraditional format using the Hughes/Hallett reform Calculus materials.

Nevertheless, as Nicole L. says in her comment, we were able to decipher all of the problems and obtain the correct answers.

Test Preparation:

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have taught Algebra 1 at the college level and have experience in tutoring the course to both high school and college students. I have expertise in all of the main topics covered in a typical Algebra 1 course, including factoring, working with rational expressions, completing the square, the quadratic formula, evaluating expressions, graphs and equations of lines, slope, simplifying radical expressions, solving equations and systems of equations, solving linear inequalities, and using Algebra to solve word problems.

Algebra 2

I have taught this course at the college and community college levels. In addition, I have successfully tutored high school students preparing for the Algebra 2/Trig New York State Regents exam, a number of which scored in the 90's. As a retired college Mathematics professor, I am knowledgeable in all of the topics normally seen in this course.

I have taught Calculus at the college level and have tutored the subject to both college and high school students. I am familiar with the computational aspects of Differential and Integral Calculus including rules for differentiation, methods of integration, and applications such as related rates, optimization problems, area and volume. I am proficient with the theoretical aspects of Calculus including limits, continuous and differentiable functions, the Mean Value Theorem, the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, and infinite series.

Differential Equations

I have taught Differential Equations at the college level. Included in the course were:

1. Methods of solving various types of First Order Differential Equations including Separable, Linear, Exact, and Homogeneous.

2. The procedure for solving higher order Homogeneous Linear Differential Equations, solving Nonhomogeneous Linear Differential Equations by the Methods of Undetermined Coefficients and Variation of Parameters.

3. Applications of First Order Differential Equations including Rate Problems and Problems in Mechanics.

4. Applications of Second Order Differential
Equations including Electric Circuit Problems and Vibration of a Mass on a Spring.

5. Numerical Methods for solving Differential Equations such as Euler's Method and the Runge-Kutta method.

6. Series solutions of Differential Equations including the method of Frobenius.

7. Solving systems of Linear Differential Equations.

I am knowledgeable in all topics that are covered in a typical Precalculus course including: functions and graphs, polynomials and rational functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, Trigonometry, trigonometric identities, trigonometric equations, applications of Trigonometry, Analytic Geometry, systems of equations and inequalities, sequences and series, and limits. I have taught the course at the college level and have successfully tutored both high school and college students in this subject.

I am currently certified in Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Trigonometry, and Geometry. The New York State Regents exams in these subject areas are basically final exams in these subjects. Consequently, certification in the subjects listed above is essentially equivalent to certification in Regents exam prep for the courses that I have listed.

I have taught Trigonometry at the college level and also have experience in tutoring the course at the high school level. I am knowledgeable with right triangle trigonometry as well as with the definitions of the circular functions.

I understand how to prove trig identities, solve application problems involving the Law of Sines or Law of Cosines, solve trig equations, and graph trig functions.

Excellent Calc tutor and very patient — Mark is an excellent tutor who is capable of making complicated topics seem very easy. I was having a lot of difficulty with my college Calculus 2 class until I started meeting with him for lessons. The lessons helped me understand the new topics easily and he also patiently helped me to correct any problems I was still having from Algebra,Trig, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus. After only a few tuto ...
