I am a NYS Certified Teaching Assistant with abundant patience and experience teaching children how to grasp the concepts they need to succeed academically. I have spent countless hours with my own child with learning disabilities, who has become a self-sufficient learner and is now a senior in college with a GPA of 3.5. I believe that the academic excellence of each of my 5 children is attributable to my individualized involvement in their learning from a young age. I have studied the masters of human development and learning; Piaget, Montessori. I have been a "Montessori Parent" for 36 years. I believe in providing a multi-modality environment for learning. Concepts need to be introduced concretely in order for abstract thought to develop and flourish. Creativity, practicality and perseverance all contribute to the learning process. I am, myself considerably a life-long learner. Curiosity always leads to discovery. I understand the diversity of learning styles and can ascertain the best approach to learning.
I have a background as a registered nurse. In hospital nursing, I always gravitated towards patient and family teaching assignments, as well as being a preceptor of new nurses. I also worked for 14 years as a school nurse. I offered extra help to struggling students on my own time. There is nothing that compares to seeing the joy in a child's when they finally "get it".
I recently worked as a Special Education Aide in an elementary school and was unfortunately "let go" along with 67 others, due to budget constraints. I am eager to have a positive influence in the life of children. I hired Dawn in July 2014 to give my son some extra help and to prepare him for the 3rd grade state exam. My initial meeting with Dawn, I was instantly impressed and very pleased with her interaction with my son. He appeared comfortable and eager to learn from her. They meet once a week for 1 hour and during that hour Dawn touches on various lessons with my son. After each session, Dawn provides me with an outline of exactly what was reviewed. Dawn would be a great asset to another child.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I began 36 years ago practicing the Montessori method of teaching phonics where each letter represents a sound before the letter name is introduced. Diagraphs are learned as separate entities. Proper pronunciation of letter sounds is introduced by playing games. I continue to engage in Montessori course work.
Having a Special Needs child of my own, I have done extensive research into learning styles and cognition. I have discovered memorization and mind mapping skills which can benefit the learner. I do not refer to people with special learning needs as disabled. I believe they are Able, it is just a matter of discovering how best to teach them. That takes individual instruction, time and patience, all of which, I offer. "Finding the key is the first step in unlocking the door of success". I have been employed as a Special Ed. Aide and have been influential in helping children makes strides in learning.
