Suffolk County Community College (Registered Nurse)
I am a NYS Certified Teaching Assistant with abundant patience and experience teaching children how to grasp the concepts they need to succeed academically. I have spent countless hours with my own child with learning disabilities, who has become a self-sufficient learner and is now a senior in college with a GPA of 3.5. I believe that the academic excellence of each of my 5 children is attributable to my individualized involvement in their learning from a young age. I have studied the masters of human development and learning; Piaget, Montessori. I have been a "Montessori Parent" for 36 years. I believe in providing a multi-modality environment for learning. Concepts need to be introduced concretely in order for abstract thought to develop and flourish. Creativity, practicality and perseverance all contribute to the learning process. I am, myself considerably a life-long learner. Curiosity always leads to discovery. I understand the diversity of learning styles and can ascertain the best approach to learning.
I have a background as a registered nurse. In hospital nursing, I always gravitated towards patient and family teaching assignments, as well as being a preceptor of new nurses. I also worked for 14 years as a school nurse. I offered extra help to struggling students on my own time. There is nothing that compares to seeing the joy in a child's when they finally "get it".
I recently worked as a Special Education Aide in an elementary school and was unfortunately "let go" along with 67 others, due to budget constraints. I am eager to have a positive influence in the life of children. Dawn has helped both my children in the short time they have been seeing her. I already see a huge difference in my son's confidence and his reading. My daughter enjoys her sessions with Dawn very much and can't wait for it to be her turn. Excellent, very patient teacher.
Extremely happy with Dawn!! She has a gift with teaching children, she gets my son to pay attention and has away about her that gets my son to listen and learn, very happy and looking forward to continuing to use her! Very patient!!
I hired Dawn in July 2014 to give my son some extra help and to prepare him for the 3rd grade state exam. My initial meeting with Dawn, I was instantly impressed and very pleased with her interaction with my son. He appeared comfortable and eager to learn from her. They meet once a week for 1 hour and during that hour Dawn touches on various lessons with my son. After each session, Dawn provides me with an outline of exactly what was reviewed. Dawn would be a great asset to another child.
Dawn is the best tutor my son ever had. She is very patient and my son has learn so much since she has been tutoring him. I highly recommend her to everyone.
Awesome teacher! My daughter loves Dawn and wants her for her full year of 5th grade. Her patience and exploring of how my daughter learns was right on point.

Dawn E. is an ideal tutor, upon her arrival she took the time necessary to pinpoint my son's challenges. She is very knowledgeable in her field and I immediately started seeing improvements within the first week. She goes above and beyond to make sure my son fully comprehend his assignments. I would definitely recommend her as a tutor.
I can not express how wonderful Dawn has been with my 5 year old son. Every day he learns more and more and is excited to seeing Dawn and having her teach him more things. With in the first week, she helped him with writing his name.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I am a NYSTCE Certified Teaching Assistant.
I began 36 years ago practicing the Montessori method of teaching phonics where each letter represents a sound before the letter name is introduced. Diagraphs are learned as separate entities. Proper pronunciation of letter sounds is introduced by playing games. I continue to engage in Montessori course work.
Having a Special Needs child of my own, I have done extensive research into learning styles and cognition. I have discovered memorization and mind mapping skills which can benefit the learner. I do not refer to people with special learning needs as disabled. I believe they are Able, it is just a matter of discovering how best to teach them. That takes individual instruction, time and patience, all of which, I offer. "Finding the key is the first step in unlocking the door of success". I have been employed as a Special Ed. Aide and have been influential in helping children makes strides in learning.
