As a certified teacher working as a Teaching Assistant, I have a broad range of experience teaching students of different ages, personalities, and abilities as I have taught in a variety of settings: a teacher in a drug & alcohol rehab for adolescents, a middle school & high school substitute teacher, a 1:1 Special Education Aide and Teaching Assistant in an elementary school behavior class, and now as a Teaching Assistant who provides Academic Intervention Services for Kindergarten through 3rd grade.

I regularly provide instruction in small groups and I give 1:1 support in all academic areas as well as assistance with social/emotional/behavioral issues that arise. While I primarily focus on students with IEP’s/Special Education classification at my job, I also work with students at risk who have not been “identified”.

I have a strong ability to build rapport with students, making them feel very comfortable, which leads to a willingness to ask questions and to communicate their needs to me- or to their teacher, which is a skill I work on with those who are reluctant to speak up in the classroom.

As your child’s tutor, I will explicitly teach skills by modeling them, repeating instruction as necessary, ensuring that there is time for observed independent practice. I will assist with organizational skills & planning for bigger projects, studying for tests, motivation to succeed including brief career exploration, and of course together we can address the dreaded homework battle.

I am confident that I can improve your child’s attitude and outlook regarding their education as they feel more confident and see their hard work leading to better academic and effort grades.

I am a New York State certified teacher for English grades 7-12 and Special Education K-12. My passion is reading and writing and I have worked with students at every level.

I am eager to help struggling students feel good about school because it so rewarding to be a part of helping students feel good about their ability to do well and to begin to envision their future.

My Master’s Degree in Sp. Ed. is with concentration in learning disabilities. I have worked extensively with students identified as having ADHD and with other educators and mental health professionals who specialize in such disorders. I frequently help students with ADHD by utilizing timers, privacy screens to block out distractions, and reward systems to increase motivation.

Got him to engage

Melissa did a great job at getting my son to join in his online lesson. He was reluctant about doing his session on such a beautiful day but Melissa coaxed him to the computer and got him to participate fully in his lesson.
