About Carolyn

My mission is to teach the fun way! If you or someone you know needs an English as a Second Language, English, Study Skills, or SAT Reading/Writing tutor, please contact me. Individual and group study currently being offered. I am a graduate of Rutgers University and a certified TESOL/ESL instructor. I received my advanced certification through the American TESOL (Teacher of Students of Other Languages) Institute.

Classes begin with a lesson explanation, and a warm-up. I use methods that make learning less like drudgery and more exciting for children, teenagers and adults struggling to learn. We will also use flashcards, pictures, and social networks to achieve our goals. I can make learning fun! My classes are geared toward turning students into dynamic learners! Immediate improvement is guaranteed!

I love to travel. I speak some Spanish and some Italian. I was raised in a bilingual household (actually trilingual since my Mom was a Spanish teacher). I am second generation Italian American. I have traveled extensively. Most recently to Italy on several extended trips. Whether it's working on an archaeological dig, hiking in the Blue Ridge mountains, experiencing the thermal pools on the island of Ischia, or shopping the markets of Rome and Naples - I have spent my life on a quest for knowledge.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

My mission is to teach English the fun way, one student at a time! If you or someone you know needs an English language tutor, please contact me. Individual and group study currently being offered. I am a certified TESOL instructor.

Classes begin with a lesson explanation, and a warm-up (ice-breaker) using song, games or literature, role playing, written dialogues, group conversations, acting out short plays, competitions, and team games. These are just a few of the methods that will be used to make learning less like drudgery and more exciting for children and adults struggling to learn English. We will also use flashcards, pictures, and social networks to achieve language acquisition. I can make learning English fun! My classes are geared toward turning students into dynamic learners!

I am a graduate of Rutgers University. I have taught Art K-3 for many years. I am a certified TESOL instructor. (Teacher of English to Speakers of Other Languages) I received my ADVANCED CERTIFICATION through the American TESOL Institute.

I love to travel. I speak some Spanish and some Italian. I was raised in a bilingual household (actually tri-lingual since my Mom was a Spanish teacher). I am second generation Italian American. I have traveled extensively, most recently to Italy on several extended trips. Whether it's working on an archeological dig, hiking in the Blue Ridge mountains, experiencing the thermal pools on the island of Ischia, or shopping the markets of Rome and Naples - I have spent my life on a quest for knowledge.

I also trained in classical ballet with Joseph Pap at the Pennsylvania Academy of Performing Arts and with Philadelphia Ballet Master William Sena. Sena was a student and dancer with the famous George Balanchine. I studied fine art, fiber arts, and ceramic arts with notable artists at Philadelphia College of Art. I then earned a B.A. from Rutgers University where I studied art education. I have been involved in community theater as an actor, costumer and set designer. I have experience teaching dance, theater and art to young students and adults. I had a very classical upbringing and education. I have devoted my life to learning. I bring many interesting skills to the TESOL classroom.

SAT Reading

I help students understand the testing process by providing skills to overcome test anxiety, as well as academic preparation.

Study Skills

As a graduate of Rutgers University, I was prepared for the demands of learning. I was further prepared in the application of that learning with a comprehensive, wide-ranging background in the liberal arts and sciences, combined with in-depth knowledge of more than one field of study.

I share with my students useful lifetime skills learned through acquisition of good study habits. Learning to focus on your work, stay organized, quizzing yourself, and using flashcards, are a few of the skills that I use to assist my students.

I am an experienced teacher with many ideas to assist my students in their learning adventure.
