About John

Hi!

I am a junior at RPI, studying Architecture. I was a straight-A student in high school and currently have a 3.18 GPA at RPI.

My greatest asset is a natural aptitude for teaching and a wealth of past experience. I've been an NHS tutor in high school as well as a tutor at the Academic Resource Center at RPI. I have also had five years of experience as a wilderness survival and outdoor skills instructor at a Boy Scout summer camp (Camp Wakpominee). In this role, I worked one-on-one and in groups with children age 12 to 17, as well as working with their parents and scout leaders.

As an instructor I have also had a lot of experience helping students with all kinds of disabilities. In fact, this is in a way my specialty, as I have had a lot of success working in this area! I do great with students with physical handicaps, learning disabilities, ADHD, Autism and other disabilities.

My strongest areas for teaching are Science, Technology, Writing Composition/Grammar and Organization/Life Skills. These are the subjects/areas I am most proficient in. However, I also feel confident teaching in a number of other areas.

As a tutor, my main approach to teaching is to listen to and observe students in order to fully understand their unique and individual needs. I then alter my teaching method to cater directly to them. I don't teach from outlines or rhetoric; instead I design lessons to deliver material in the method that is most effective for them at helping them learn.

Please note that my hourly price is openly negotiable and that I am very flexible with times and locations.

Thanks for reading and I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I myself have ADHD and intimately understand the needs of an ADHD student. I have also have experience working with ADHD students in my job as an outdoor skills instructor and an NHS tutor. In addition, my simbling are ADHD, and I have been tutoring them for many years.
In order to effectively teach an ADHD student, one must be sensitive to their need for repetition of material and alternate presentation media for learnign material (written, read, spoken, drawn, etc).

Adobe InDesign

As an Architecture student, I use InDesign for nearly every project I do. After producing a graphis in Photoshop or Illustrator, I then use InDesign to format the project deliverable for submission. For the past two years I have been taught InDesign, used it continuously and also taught it to some of the freshmen coming into the program.

Architecture

I am currently an Architecture student ar RPI. Thus far I have:
-- Taken and passed three Architecture history classes
-- Completed four architectural design projects
-- Taken various other classes related to building, structures and other architectural practicies

I currently maintain a 3.11 cumulative GPA at RPI.

Aspergers

In my job as a wilderness survival and outdoor skills instructor at Camp Wakpominee Boy Scout Summer Camp, I have worked with several students with Aspergers. To successfully teach a student with Aspergers, I have learned to maintain a high level of patience, interperate their special needs for communication and logically meet those special needs while teaching the material.

Autism

In my job as a wilderness survival and outdoor skills instructor at Camp Wakpominee Boy Scout Summer Camp, I have also worked with many students with autism. I also have an autistic cousin with whom I have learned to communicate quite effectively. I have learned the skills of interperating an autistic student's special needs as far as communication, how to draw in their attention so that they actually hear what you are saying, how to allow them short periods to rest between segments of a lesson and generally how to connect with them so that I can effectively communicate with them.

Bible Studies

I have been a religious education teacher's assistant in the past. My mother and grandmother are also religious education teachers. I have been taught by them my entire life and also helped them teach my siblings and cousins. I have skills in interperating Bible readings in the context of the time period they were written as well as decyphering religious metaphors. I attend mass regularly and have been a practicing Christian my entire life.

Computer Programming

I have taught myself several programming languages, including Java and mIRC Script— which I still use today. I have taken classes in Java in the past as well. I am able to teach the concepts of computer programming, including data structures, search methods, pricipals of syntax and lexicon of many languages, concept of object-oriented programming versus function-based programming, logical opperater heirarchy, decision making processes and much more.
