I am semi-retired after 30+ years in journalism, including 23 years at The Post-Standard in Syracuse. During my career, I honed my writing, research, editing, reading, grammatical, spelling and many other English-related skills on a daily basis and I feel that that experience gives me excellent credentials to tutor students on related subjects. I am also a skilled computer user and especially like working with seniors who want to learn about the internet from a patient and understanding teacher.
Over the years, I was an occasional substitute teacher and during my newspaper career, I mentored a number of young journalists.
I believe my English and computer skills would be invaluable to students of any age, and I welcome the opportunity to tutor students in the sometimes complicated world of English, including ESL and ESOL. As you can see in my profile, I am also certified in a number of other subjects. I have worked extensively with Windows operating systems, including Windows 8 and Windows 8.1.
I am also available to work with students in the art of successful proofreading (spelling, grammar, sentence structure, punctuation) of papers, reports, journals or stories.
If you are looking to brush up on your computer skills - or simply learn your way around Facebook - I can help you with those kinds of things as well.

I chose Suzanne to help my daughter improve her SAT scores in reading. Suzanne was very flexible with her time and provided great instruction that pinpointed what my daughter needed. She was friendly and easy to work with. I would highly recommend her as a tutor.
Suzanne E, worked very well with my high school student. She was flexible to meet with him after sports. Suzanne worked on his vocabulary and pronunciation give him tips and tricks. She give him the extra push to understand the material that made him progress in English for success. Having Suzanne working with my child made English more enjoyable for him to learn.
My wife was the one taking lessons with Suzanne. It was our first time finding a tutor via this site and she found it a very nice surprise. Suzanne is very patient, polite and eager to help!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I majored in elementary education the first time I attended college and even though my bachelor's degree is in English/Writing Arts with a minor in journalism, I have substitute taught in EE and feel confident that I have the ability to work with young children in a variety of subjects.
I am tutoring a woman from Brazil in ESL and using “Basic American Grammar and Usage, An ESL/EFL Handbook” (by Marcel Danesi, PhD) as the basis for my curriculum. I also have her reading newspapers and doing some online ESL worksheets and drills that focus on grammar and sentence structure.
I earned my bachelor's degree in English and taught elementary students basic reading and language for a time. As a 30-year journalist, my English skills are impeccable and I feel that I am an excellent tutor for someone struggling with the many quirks of the English language. I am extremely patient and a kind and understanding teacher, something that's important when dealing with immigrants, regardless of their age.
As a journalist (recently-retired) for nearly three decades at a major metropolitan daily newspaper, it was essential to know my way around a computer. I have a broad and workable knowledge of Windows, Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 and feel very comfortable in teaching someone how to navigate through these operating systems. Every day, I discover something new on my home computer and look forward to sharing that excitement with others.
I understand that older folks, especially, might feel slightly embarrassed or uncomfortable because they know so little about all of this confusing and rapidly changing technology, but I'm nearly a senior myself and therefore I understand their feelings and have the time and patience to guide them through the maze.
I've also kept up with just about everything (Twitter, Facebook, 4Square and the rest) so I can help younger folks (and their parents who want to understand and be involved with what their kids are doing online) as well!
I have worked with Windows since it was created by Microsoft and know the system inside and out. I would have no problem helping others learn to navigate its sometimes confusing pathways. I look forward to helping you or your student learn how to work with Windows.
I am a professional journalist who has written and edited copy for 30 years. I have received numerous local, state and national awards for my work, which is always clean and efficient. I am a stickler for accuracy in spelling, grammar and punctuation, and I rarely miss an error; even when many others have "proofread" something, I will find mistakes.
I am a certified, active reading tutor and willing to tutor all ages.
I have tutored a couple of high school students in reading, specifically dealing with ACT and SAT questions. The parents of both complimented me on my work and said I had been a great help to their children. I am also a professional journalist with an immense vocabulary.
During my 30-year career in journalism, I never used spell check and yet I had a reputation among editors for always turning in extremely "clean" copy. I still make a living by writing, and I still avoid the pitfalls of spell check. You will never find a misspelled word in anything I have written because on the rare occasion that I'm not sure how to spell something, I look it up in a dictionary!
I majored in English/Writing Arts in college and worked as a professional print journalist, both as an editor and reporter, for more than 30 years. I am familiar with the teaching/tutoring methods for TOEFL as well as ESL and ESOL. I received many awards for my writing and have excellent English skills on many levels.
As a lifelong, avid reader and a professional writer and editor, my vocabulary is extensive. My spelling is phenomenal (I never used any spell-check programs in my 30-year writing career) and if I ever come upon a word I don't know or understand, I always look it up. I love words!
Professional working journalist for 30 years.
Numerous writing awards from the Associated Press, the New York Press Association, the Syracuse Press Club and others.
Currently semi-retired and doing freelance writing.
