About Rich

The legendary UCLA basketball coach John Wooden defines his career not in terms of NCAA Championships his teams won or in terms of the players who went on to careers in professional basketball. Rather, he defines himself as a teacher. I've had four decades of corporate, nonprofit, and academic experience and while my career does not rival Coach Wooden's, he and I both are fundamentally teachers.

At every stop in my professional life, whether working for a major defense contractor, the world's premier pediatric cancer center, or a global university, I've helped others with their writing and public speaking. I've been an adjunct instructor at four institutions of higher education dating back to the 1980s. I taught not just the subject matter of the courses, I also helped students become better writers and speakers. At one institution I even created and presented formal workshops.

I teach students how to think about their topic before ever writing their first sentence. I teach writing for impact, proper sequencing of material, streamlining written work, and how to bring dead prose alive. In public speaking, I show students how to prepare for a speaking engagement and how to deliver winning talks. I offer tips on expanding their vocabulary, and I show them how to control anxiety over public speaking.

Please feel free to contact me if you would like additional information or to schedule an appointment.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

I have created and delivered workshops at New York University on effective presentations. I have been a part-time instructor throughout my career, including high school substitute teaching and college level teaching at four institutions, including New York University. I am a frequent presenter at professional conferences. My career has been spent mostly in the nonprofit sector, where I routinely made presentations about the organization I represented.
