About Ben

Dear Students/Parents Seeking Tutoring:

I decided to join WyzAnt as a tutor because I am currently a student myself at Schenectady County Community College (SCCC) where I am studying Hotel and Restaurant Management. Additionally, I am a professional math tutor at SCCC where I help students in math areas including finite math, algebra, trigonometry, statistics, and precalculus.

For more than 10 years, I worked as a professional engineer in the areas of telecommunications, technical software training, data networking, and project management. I love teaching others and I love learning, too. I always learn from my students.

In addition to having experience teaching adults, I have also taught students at the elementary school levels, K-6. Equally challenging, I enjoy observing how children learn and how they make quantum jumps from one age to another in understanding, technical ability, and socialization. I have four years experience working in public schools with children of different learning styles and different learning challenges. Most of my public education experience was working with special needs populations. I have worked one-on-one with children on the autism spectrum, having ADD/ADHD, et al. My experiences with these children were rewarding and enjoyable.

Lastly, I welcome your questions regarding my qualifications to be your tutor or the tutor of your son/daughter. My tutoring style is effective, customized, and results-oriented. I incorporate my knowledge from engineering and living outside of the United States, my experience with teaching special needs children, my own learning style, and graduate-level coursework in education and I see every student holistically.

Thank you.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

In 2009 and 2011, respectively, I taught 3rd and 5th grade subjects in the classroom as a teaching assistant in a Washington, DC public school (Patterson Elementary) and in a Washington, DC public charter school (Two Rivers). Also, in 2004, I was a permanent substitute teacher for an entire year in North Carolina (New Hope Elementary, Chapel Hill, NC). My teaching mission has always been to help all students maximize their fullest educational potentials in the classroom.

Elementary Math

I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Telecommunications Engineering Technology and I've completed two Masters of Arts courses in Education Administration. I have tutored adults in literacy, as well, and I am an active volunteer for the Commission on Economic Opportunity which supplies children who have financial challenges with backpacks filled with school supplies each year.

I have worked in three elementary schools as a teaching assistant, special needs assistant, year-long, permanent substitute teacher, and as the school librarian. In the summer, I have taught technology curriculum, math and reading, using Dimension-M, a game-based learning software.

Finite Math

This academic school year (2014) I was hired by Schenectady County Community College (SCCC) to be a professional math tutor in its math lab where I tutor students in a range of math subjects through precalculus, including finite math. I have successfully helped some students enrolled in finite math with their homework. I feel confident that I can help others in this math-related area.
