About Katie

I am a certified Montessori teacher with experience as a preschool, kindergarten and 1st grade teacher. I also have experience with teaching children with 504 and IEP accommodations. My strength is small group and one on one instruction using concrete, hands on lessons and materials that build your child's confidence and proficiency in foundational skills that leads to language, reading, and math success. I foster independence and self organization and motivation that will serve your child throughout their educational pursuits.

Using a hands-on Montessori method, your child will benefit from a multi-sensory tutoring experience. I believe that learning should be an enjoyable and rewarding experience that is adapted to your child's learning style. I have found this especially beneficial when working with children with processing and sensory challenges. I will focus on your child's interests and strengths and provide support in pre-reading, letter recognition and sound discrimination. Refining listening skills and comprehension. I have experience with strengthening and refining your child's fine motor skills to enhance and develop writing of letters, numbers and composition on words and sentences.

Summer is a perfect time to give your child the "I can read" attitude and confidence through phonic games and one on one practice and experiencing success and a new found confidence. It is also the time to destroy the myth that Math is hard or intimidating. With concrete and systematic presentation of hands on Math materials and practice with numerals and quantities, sequencing, and addition, subtraction and skip counting your child will return to school with new confidence.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am an American Montessori Society certified teacher with over 5 years experience in early childhood and elementary classrooms. I teach in a k/1 class and have students with remedial, grade level, and advanced math and reading skills.

I use a concrete, hands on Math Curriculum that enforces number recognition, quantities, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, plan value and algebra.

I work with pre and emerging readers on letter recognition, isolating sounds, growing vocabulary and fine motor strength and control for handwriting development.

Elementary Math

I have extensive experience teacher Prek, Kindergarten, and Lower Elementary Math. I am have my degree in Early Childhood Education to teacher Prek-2nd grade.

Handwriting

I have extensive experience in strengthening fine motor skills through fun activities. This is the foundation for handwriting improvement. Then we can tackle proper pincer grip, positioning of paper, posture, and letter formation. Once these components are in place it is practice, practice, practice. I have the tools and experience to keep the practice fun.

Special Needs

I have spent the last 3 school years working in classrooms with special needs students. I have experience with ADHD, LD, and MR learning challenges. I also have experience working with emotionally disturbed and behaviorally challenged students.

I have experience with breaking up new concepts into smaller pieces and the need for re teaching and repetition to master new skills.

Grasping abstract concepts can be challenging so I like to starting with concrete and familiar activities first to build confidence.
