I am Nestor! I graduated with a Bachelor's of Science in Biology, but my interests also include math and languages. I then got a Masters in Education. I learned that there is no such thing as the "best" way to teach. Each individual is different and I like to learn about my students so that I can adapt to their needs and help them succeed. I am Nestor! I graduated with a Bachelor's of Science in Biology, but my interests also include math and languages. I then got a Masters in Education. I learned that there is no such thing as the "best" way to teach. Each individual is different and I like to learn about my students so that I can adapt to their needs and help them succeed. My first lesson is a diagnostic that allows me to see how the student thinks and where they need help. Afterwards, I personalize the lessons to include topics that my students enjoy and attempt to strengthen weaknesses, while maintaining strengths. I try to keep a methodical approach and make sure students learn systematically for better knowledge retention. Having fun is essential. I believe that enjoyment is linked to motivation and confidence so I want students to feel comfortable learning.

With regards to math experience, I received a 790 in math for the SATs. As an undergrad, I was selected to tutor college-level calculus due to my grades. Afterwards, I tutored in New York, helping students with test prep for the SATs, the Hunter High School Exam, and the SHSATs. Many of my students were able to gain acceptance into schools of their choice each year.

In terms of ESL experience, I taught ESL classes to students from 5-30 years old at a summer camp in Shanghai. As a tutor in New York for 2+ years, I provided TOEFL help for adults. Later, I worked for a small English Conversation School for 3+ years in Tokyo. There, I helped students from 5-50 years old with English conversation. Afterwards, I taught English in public Japanese elementary schools for 2 years.

I also have ample experience teaching Japanese. I spoke Japanese at home and also learned formally at universities in New York and Japan. I taught Japanese classes as a TA during undergrad. Afterwards, I became a lecturer of Japanese at universities in New York and Japan.

Easy going, friendly and prepared

I worked with Nestor and very much enjoyed my first session with him. He's approachable and friendly, which is incredibly helpful when working on a challenging topic, such as Japanese where you have to feel comfortable in order to effectively learn the material. He was both organized and prepared, which is also helpful as I've had tutors in the past who were very skilled at Japanese, but didn't necessarily have the organizational skills to both assess my proficiency and develop a plan to facilitate my language learning. Finally, Nestor is aware of a lot of different teaching approaches and can develop creative ways to teach which I definitely appreciate.
