About Sarah

My name is Sarah, and I am attending Nyack College as a vocal performance student. I am experienced in almost every genre of music, including classical, jazz, Broadway, pop, etc. I have been performing since I was 2 years old, and I plan to continue doing so for as long as I can! I plan to work in music production, songwriting, and many other fields of music besides singing, as well. I moved to New York in 2015, and I am originally from the Midwest. I love working with kids, and I have taught many adults, as well.

I mostly work with beginners, but I am also open to work with anyone who wants to improve their technique. I focus on breathing techniques, correct placement of vowels for each individual style, and longevity of the voice through the use of correct techniques. My hours are flexible, and I just ask that we try to keep a steady schedule of meeting at least once a week, with room for some exceptions. My goal is to create sustainability and confidence in your voice, technique, and performance. I look forward to working with you! :)

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ear Training

I have always had a great ear for music, and got by in lessons for a long time only learning by ear and not reading music. I have taken extensive classes in ear training for the last 6-7 years, and have put it to practice in my own work, as well. I like to try to help people who struggle with it by using recognizable patterns, and common sense reasoning to apply real life examples to ear training.

General Music

Music is such a broad subject, and even spending the last 12-15 years studying it in different aspects, I will admit that I still have a lot to learn. That being said, I do believe that my knowledge could cover most bases of music as a broader subject. I have taken vocal and piano lessons, I have written songs, and I have composed music. My experience ranges from basic opera, to Broadway, to pop.

Sight Singing

For the first 5-10 years of my piano and vocal training, I did not learn to read music, but rather learned to read by ear and by sight. I have since learned to put that to use, while now being able to read music, as well. I like to make sure my students know how to use solfege (Do, Re, Mi), so they can apply that when sight singing, instead of trying to sing the words at first.

Voice (Music)

I have taken vocal lessons for the last twelve years. I have given vocal lessons privately for a year, and my students have all given positive feedback and have seen major improvements in their overall singing abilities. I am currently a vocal performance major at Nyack College, located in downtown Manhattan. Over the last five years, I have studied the anatomically correct ways to sing to ensure quality vocal health for a lifetime.
