About Alex

I am a second grade teacher at a charter school in Long Island City. Originally from Westchester, I currently live in Astoria. This is my seventh year teaching! I have taught kindergarten, second grade, third grade, fourth grade, and fifth grade in public and Catholic schools in Washington, DC, San Francisco, Oakland, Brooklyn, and Queens. In summer programs and with family members I have taught or worked with middle and high school aged students as well.
For my undergraduate studies I attended McGill University in Montreal where I double majored in art history and world religions. I spent some time working at the Metropolitan Museum of Art before joining DC Teaching Fellows and following my mothers footsteps into the classroom. Despite only having taught elementary, I am well versed in history and literature of all ages, fluent in math through middle school, and have a strong background in writing as I have had stories and poems published.

Reading and writing are my strong suit as well as my passion. I scored a 690 on the reading portion of my SAT and a 710 on my writing. Reading is a favored pursuit of mine and if I have not read the book your child is working on, I will read it with them gladly. Writing is also a hobby of mine as I have had stories and poems published. Even when I was in high school I would assist friends and peers with their writing, especially their college admission essays.

I have been a K-6 teacher for going on seven years. On my elementary school content PRAXIS exam I earned a perfect score.

I went to the New York State geography bee finals three years in a row in middle school, and my first tattoo was of a compass. Maps and geography always will have a special place in my heart. In undergraduate studies I double majored in art history and world religions.

If you're looking for a tattooed, bearded tutor with seven years of teaching experience, I'm your man!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
