About Jessica

After studying International Studies and French in university, I spent seven years traveling the world, teaching and tutoring. I then earned my MA in TESOL - Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages- at The New School in New York City. My focus was teaching and my professional project was "Teaching English through Improvisation."

Classroom teaching is so much fun and I love my students, but tutoring is special because it's so exciting to see students progress on an individual level. I am a friendly, fun ESL professional who has helped students prepare for speeches, exams, college entry, theatre performances, and a wide array of essay-writing. I have taught in France, Korea, and the United States, and tutored students from all over the world.

If you're looking for a kind, supportive tutor, send me a message!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I teach English as a Second Language professionally, but I have also tutored native speakers in matters of writing, grammar, and reading help. I am fully comfortable helping students with any English issue they may have, from literary analysis to grammar help.

ESL/ESOL

I have been teaching ESL/ESOL since 2006, when I was part of the Assistantship English Language Program in France. I began tutoring at that time as well, and have since tutored international students in many subjects. I am currently an ESL specialist at the Learning Center at The New School University.

Public Speaking

I have tutored students at The New School University as an employee of The Learning Center in diverse subjects, including public speaking, since 2013. In addition, I have been studying and teaching theater for nearly ten years, and a large portion of this has been directing student actors in proper dictation, elocution, and speech-giving. I am a graduate of the UCB and Magnet Theater programs, which teach many exercises meant to give students public speaking skills. While in Korea, I tutored business professionals in these and other techniques to improve their abilities to speak before colleagues.

Theatre

I have been performing since I was a child, from musical theater to period dramas. While I was in college I served for two years on the Studio Theater Board, during which time I produced, directed, and acted in over thirty productions. While I was in Korea, I directed a regularly-performing acting troupe and served as Development Director for Seoul City Improv for three years. I was voted "Best Actor" for my performance in the 2010 Seoul 48 Hour Film Festival. As part of my MA in TESOL, I created the class "Teaching ESL through Improv," which taught techniques developed from such luminaries as Del Close, Viola Spolin, and the creators of the UCB Theater in NYC. I am a graduate of the UCB Improv program and a current student at The Magnet, specializing in musical improvisation.

Writing

As part of my job as an English Language Instructor, I have taught writing classes both at the sentence level and into thesis development. Tutoring at The New School University is almost entirely English writing help, and I spend a large portion of that time helping students edit their English papers.
