About Montgomery

I began teaching in the summer after 8th grade, as an exchange student at a Japanese High School. As much as I loved learning, what was far more exciting was the look on a fellow student's face when some strange roundabout explanation unlocked a new word for them, and they ran with that new power, peppering every phrase with their new tool. In more formal capacities, I have assisted and taught acting, voice, and speech for 10 years; taught English online to foreign speakers for 4 years; coached professional actors for auditions and privately tutored students in writing, acting, and film production for 2 years.

Language, both English and foreign, has been a passion of mine from a young age: as a professional in industries where the English Language is our primary instrument, my appreciation and breadth of knowledge has expanded and allowed me to explore to sides of myself and new industries. It's that amazing freedom that a deeper understanding of English unlocks that I love sharing with my students; so often, English lessons can feel like an endless merry-go-round of incongruous grammatical rules that leave young people dizzy and frustrated instead of playful and empowered. My core goal is to flip that paradigm on its head and improve your English skills not solely to raise test scores but more importantly to raise your confidence, creativity, and engagement with the world around you.

I'm professional actor, playwright, and filmmaker with extensive experience producing, casting, and developing new work and young artists. I've performed from New York to London to Texas in world premieres and classics, been nominated for Best Featured Actor and produced a short play that won best New Short Script at the New York IT Awards, was a 2013 recipient of the Dallas/Fort Worth Critics Forum Award for Best Actor, have had plays selected as semi-finalists at the Eugene O'Neill New Play Conference and Primary Stages's ESPA Drills New Play series, as well as being selected for readings and festivals at Kitchen Dog Theatre, The Aviary, and the Metropolitan Playhouse. What all of that allows me to bring to our work together is experience, passion, and a keen eye for finding what is unique about you and will make you shine in a way that no other artist can. At the same time, because I work at a high professional level, I expect and demand the same of my students. While I encourage the work itself to be free, organic, and delightfully spontaneous, I expect the preparation to be rigorous and extensive.

I look forward to meeting you and helping you soar!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

As a successful professional actor and playwright, I bring a deep and organic knowledge of the English language to my students. In addition to improving technical skills, I make harnessing the power of language fun by focusing on English as a means to further expression, creativity, personal exploration. As a playwright, my writing has been produced, developed, and featured in staged readings around the United States, from Metropolitan Playhouse and EBE Ensemble in New York to Kitchen Dog Theatre and The Aviary in Texas and I've spent multiple summer training high school playwrights in Junior Players' PUP Fest summer playwriting program.

BFA, NYU Tisch: Artist & Scholar Award; Dean’s List

St. Mark's School of Texas: Cum Laude Society; National Merit Award Winner

Theatre

Recently appeared as Orsino in "Twelfth Night" at Shakespeare's Globe in London, as Stanley Stubbers in "One Man, Two Guvnors" at Florida Studio Theatre, as Hellicanus in "Pericles" with Passion in Practice at the Savannah Music Festival, and will appear this summer with New York Classical Theatre. I've worked on dozens of world premiere plays and musicals as well as classical work (from Shakespeare to Voltaire) and on both sides of the camera in independent films and web series. BFA, Drama from NYU in 2009; Actors' Equity Association (the professional actors union) member since 2009.

I've taught at the Atlantic Theater Company, the Dallas Children's Theater, and for Junior Players, and coached actors privately for video auditions with my company, Astoria Video Auditions.

I'm also a director (for film and stage) and a playwright -- my most recent play was an official selection of the New Works Festival at Kitchen Dog Theatre in Dallas, TX and was a semi-Finalist for the acclaimed Eugene O'Neill National Playwrights Conference.

You can view an acting resume on my website, and I can provide a more in depth background on my training and my experience teaching and coaching if needed. Thank you!
