About Alan

I am a Cambridge-certified ESL teacher from Queens. Born and raised in NYC, I received my bachelor's degree in philosophy from Clark University, and my Cambridge CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) from Teaching House. I received a perfect score of 800 on the reading section of the SAT, and have experience tutoring elementary and middle schoolers in English and math as well. Working at language schools throughout the city, I have taught students ages 6 through 60+ from a wide variety of backgrounds and languages.

I pride myself on making learners comfortable with our lessons and with the language. My philosophy on tutoring is that it should be fun, rigorous, and practical. We'll cover the fundamentals of grammar and vocabulary, while going beyond to learn how English is actually spoken and written in real life and in American culture. We'll work not just from textbooks, but with original material from the real world: newspaper stories, song lyrics, and more. And most importantly, we'll work on what YOU want and need from the English language. So, tell me about you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I received my Cambridge CELTA certification from Teaching House, and have logged hundreds of hours teaching ESL at New York City language schools. I work with teenage and adult students from across the globe, both 1 to 1 and in large classrooms. I tailor lessons to students' specific needs and goals, while building a strong foundation in receptive skills, productive skills, and language systems.

ISEE

I have worked all over NYC preparing elementary and middle schoolers for the ISEE and other secondary school entrance exams. I tutor students 1-on-1 at a nonprofit in the Bronx, and in the classroom at a school in Manhattan. My private students have included the children of Irish and Korean immigrants taking the TACHS (Test for Admission into Catholic Highs Schools). My lessons emphasize test-taking strategies and targeting gaps in knowledge.

Reading

Every Sunday, I tutor elementary and middle school students in Math, English, homework help and test-taking skills at a non-profit in the Bronx. I have experience teaching at after-school programs preparing 3rd and 7th graders for the NY State Common Core exams. In addition, I tutor private students at their homes across the city.

SAT Reading

I received a perfect score of 800 on the reading sections of both the PSAT and SAT. I am a published writer with a bachelor's degree in philosophy who's passionate about the logic of language. I aim to get students excited about reading and writing and help them achieve their absolute best.
