About Gregory

I am a graduate student and adjunct professor at Hunter College. I have experience tutoring lowerclassmen all my years through high school and college and volunteering as a tutor of various middle school and junior high classes at the Refugee Center of Thessaloniki, Greece.

I come from a family of educators and I appreciate the value of a good teacher. My personal experience with private tutors has shown me that there is little positive correlation between a long list of credentials in the subject and competence at teaching the subject - acquiring knowledge and sharing it are two separate processes. The tutors who have been most successful in piquing my curiosity and improving my academic performance have been deeply knowledgeable, but wouldn't have managed to pass any of it on to me without their limitless enthusiasm, their sharp sense of humor and their engaging character. Inasmuch as I have the talent and resourcefulness, I try to teach in the same manner.

My goal in tutoring is to combine my theoretical knowledge of the subject with my practical knowledge of the technicalities of the academic world. It is important to enable the student to succeed in their standardized tests, to guide them through the characteristic peculiarities of the educational institution they attend or aim to attend and to perform well in the evaluations required of them. But indispensable for this success is the nurturing of a genuine curiosity for the subject.

The universe of mathematics is an immense, intricately interconnected and ever-expanding structure. It can be extraordinary and beautiful but also overwhelming in its strange abstractions, and a lesson can either be an exciting exploration of this brilliant mental edifice or a painfully boring enumeration of dry logical implications. I try my very best to achieve the former, and with the help of my students we can both avoid the latter!

Please message me if you wish to know more about my experience and expertise.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I am a mathematics graduate student and adjunct lecturer at a college. I have taught courses in single and multivariate calculus as well as linear algebra and numerical methods, and I have tutored Algebra 1 in the past with great reviews. I am very happy to work with high school/junior high students as much as college students in need of boost in basic college math.

Calculus

I am teaching single-variate and multi-variate undergraduate calculus courses at a college, and I also have experience tutoring calculus one-on-one at the high school level.

Differential Equations

As a graduate student of mathematics I am intimately familiar with differential equations. I am currently teaching advanced multivariable calculus at CUNY Hunter College, and I have taught Linear Algebra and Numerical Methods course in the past, all of which use or explore topics of Differential Equations from different angles. I am also currently performing research in Mathematical Biology modeling biological systems via systems of differential equations. I use them in my daily work, and in my studies as a graduate student.

Linear Algebra

As an adjunct professor at Hunter College I have taught Linear Algebra at the undergraduate level, and I continue to study and use it for my research at the graduate level.
