As the assistant photo editor for the Yankees I am responsible for selecting and editing photographs for Yankees Magazine and the Yankees yearbook. These publications are circulated worldwide to our subscribers and are sold during Yankees home games. My work selecting and editing photographs has extended to include the New Era Pinstripe Bowl, as well as solely selecting the cover photo for the 2012 Opening Day commemorative program.
Additionally, I am responsible for shooting games and related team events, traveling nationally to photograph feature stories for Yankees Magazine, and managing the photography team’s budget. In my photography role, I shoot all Yankee home games, and have most notably shot Alex Rodriguez’s 600th homerun, Derek Jeter’s 3000th hit, Mariano Rivera’s 602nd save, and Jorge Posada’s retirement. I have also worked on Yankees Magazine feature story profiles of former pitching coach Mel Stottlemeyer; former players Aaron Small, Brian Boehringer and Jack Reed; and top draft pick Cito Culver. Managing the team’s photography budget also requires sound organizational skills and the ability to make financial decisions regarding new equipment purchases.
I have completed several relevant photography internships, beginning in 2009 as a photo intern for the Carroll County Times, a 30,000-circulation daily newspaper in Westminster, Maryland. In this position, I shot assignments on a daily basis, assisted on photo shoots, covered the Baltimore Ravens training camp, and worked with the newspaper’s design team to choose photos for printing on a strict deadline. These tasks required me to work well under pressure and make editorial decisions about the newspaper’s published photographs. In addition to my work with the Carroll County Times, I was a photo intern for the New York Yankees beginning in June 2010.
During my academic career at Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, I served as Visual Lead Producer for TheNewshouse.com, an online news website for Syracuse students, and Assistant Photo Editor for The Daily Orange, the independent student newspaper of Syracuse University. In both positions, I was responsible for assigning photographers to area events, editing photographers’ pictures and providing feedback, coordinating weekly editorial meetings, formatting photographs for web and print use, and submitting all materials to web and print editors. These positions required that I have excellent editorial judgment, and the ability to manage and organize a staff of approximately one dozen photographers.
Through these positions, I have honed my photography skills and gained relevant editorial, organizational, and technical experience. I am confident that my experience can help me make a positive contribution to the success of my students and their endeavors in the field of photography.
