I do my best to discover each student's passions and relate that positive energy to the lesson material. The most effective teaching is always one-on-one, and tutoring offers the unique opportunity to adapt learning to specific individual needs.
I have over five years teaching and tutoring experience at both college and high school levels. I have received consistent positive feedback from students and administration.
My background allows versatility as an instructor. I have studied education, earning NYS teacher certification in English (7-12) while my English graduate work also included study of philosophy and psychology. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught English for five years, mostly at the college level with some High School experience. During that time, I also tutored students in reading, writing, speeches, cover letters, and college applications. I cater lessons to individual student needs, while also doing my best to make lessons fun and approachable.
I have a Master of Arts in English.
I have been playing guitar for 20 years. I have much experience teaching and tutoring beginners and have developed a simple approach to quickly develop the necessary skills to play the guitar.
I worked in a music program at a summer camp for five summers, advancing to Director of the program for three of those summers. My contribution as director was creating and managing two live concerts each summer, performed by my students.
Literature contains lessons, and reading teaches how to develop perception, and expand perspective. I love stories, and students appreciate this passion. I have often heard a student remark: "I never looked at it that way before." This tells me I have successfully taught something new, by using literature to expand my student's view.
I have been playing music for 22 years, and writing original songs for 17 years. It's fun, and soulfully therapeutic. I have taught music for three years, and writing for five years, often blending the two arts.
