About Amanda

Teaching is more than a job to me….it is my passion.

After graduating with my Masters in Special Education in 2004, I started my career in the classroom right away. I spent three years teaching Special Education in Florida where I received the Rookie Teacher of the Year Award for my county.

Deciding to travel abroad, I taught as a classroom teacher for 4th and 5th grade in Berlin, Germany for two years at a private IB school. I also spent five years as a 4th grade classroom teacher, a middle school ESL teacher and instructional coach, and special education teacher at a private school in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

During the past ten years in addition to teaching in the classroom, I regularly tutored expatriate and international students specializing in small group or one-on-one tutoring for writing, reading and homework help as well as SAT prep.

I offer a free initial consultation meeting where I gather information about each student, discuss goals and decide together if we can work as a team. Every student learns differently and has individual learning styles that are easily identified and catered to in my tutoring sessions.

I love connecting with my students and helping them build their confidence as their grades and abilities grow. An environment that is conducive for learning is essential for optimal success during a tutoring session. I am a mother of two and cannot offer that kind of place, and therefore I am happy to travel to your home. Libraries are also an ideal place where we can work together, and I am willing to drive up to 20 miles from my home in Ashville, NY.

I ask for a 24 hour cancellation notice, but I do understand that sometimes things happen last minute, even on my end. I will offer a make-up class in that situation. If you do not show up to a scheduled tutoring session, and I don’t receive any notice of cancellation the full price will be charged.

I will keep a record of our time spent together, and once a month I will provide a brief report on our progress. I will also ask for feedback in order to ensure that you feel your needs are being met.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve your learning goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

With my masters in Special Education and ten years of experience in the classroom, I feel that I am well qualified for this subject. I have created behavior plans for students with ADD/ADHD, provided accommodations and taught my co-teachers during professional development opportunities about best practices in relation to students diagnosed with ADD/ADHD.

Common Core

As Common Core was introduced throughout the United States, it was also introduced to the school where I was teaching in the Dominican Republic. So I had exposure to it at the Middle School and 2nd and 3rd grade levels. Currently, I am a substitute at two different schools that both use the Common Core, and I am familiar with it at multiple grade levels. I have a masters in Special Education and ten years of experience in the classroom.

ESL/ESOL

I began tutoring for students learning English in 2007, and my first students were German and Korean. I lived in Berlin, Germany at the time and enjoyed the international base of the city. In 2009, I moved to the Dominican Republic and tutored primarily Spanish speaking students of all ages who wanted stronger English skills. I am both experienced and qualified!

Social Studies

My love of history and Social Studies pointed me to my college path. I graduated from SUNY Brockport with a Bachelor of Arts in History. Later, after becoming a teacher, I had the pleasure of working with and learning from two middle school Social Studies teachers. I was a co-teacher with them and an instructional coach. They primarily taught the content, and I had a chance to experience a classroom with quality and energy driven Social Studies teachers in action.

Study Skills

As a Special Education teacher, I have a variety of strategies to teach study skills. Working closely with the student, families and teachers, strong study skills are achievable. With my masters in Special Education and ten years of experience in the classroom, I feel that I am well qualified for this subject.
