About William

I am looking forward to helping with reading and writing preparation for school or tests. As a graduate student, college teacher, and certified public middle/high school instructor, I am familiar with the standards you will need to meet. My Orton-Gillingham method tutor training also prepares me to diagnose/determine your areas of difficulty (and strength!) to help you acquire and develop specific subject-matter skills. I emphasize a meta-cognitive approach, so we will discuss what each task requires and the thought processes you will want to implement. Let's get started! Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Praxis

I received a score of 200/200 on the Praxis Literature exam (0041) in 2010. I have trained to tutor dyslexics, teach English (Connecticut 7-12, end. 015, Massachusetts 5-8, 9-12), and teach composition.

Public Speaking

Most recently, I taught oral presentations in first-year composition at SUNY New Paltz, 2012-2014. I also studied to teach public speaking as part of the English Language Arts curriculum during my Connecticut Alternate Route to Certification training (English 7-12, Conn. endorsement 015). At Stuyvesant High School (NYC), I was captain of the Lincoln-Douglas debate team, winning the NYS championship (1992), the district qualifier (6th at nationals), and a variety of other tournaments. I also qualified for nationals (twice) in extemporaneous speech.
