I appreciate that every student has a unique history and relationship with these subjects. I prepare a unique lesson for each meeting which is informed by a brief discussion prior. I like to start by discussing the subject matter in a casual, approachable way; both answering and asking questions as we go. I appreciate that every student has a unique history and relationship with these subjects. I prepare a unique lesson for each meeting which is informed by a brief discussion prior. I like to start by discussing the subject matter in a casual, approachable way; both answering and asking questions as we go. This allows us to explore the student's knowledge base and relationship with the subject. The conversation will naturally transition to more technical aspects, with conceptual discussions and guided problem solving designed to fill in knowledge gaps. I design problems that are uniquely challenging yet approachable for the individual. Successful completion of these problems instills a rewarding sense of accomplishment, confidence, and pride which encourages students down the path of a life long learner.
I received my Masters in high-energy astrophysics at the University of California, Santa Cruz. During my time as a researcher I worked at a range of world class laboratories including Fermilab, Jefferson Lab, and SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory conducting research in astrophysics, particle physics, and cosmology. Upon leaving academia I took a year to travel before moving to NYC at the end of 2019, great timing...
I financed my travels by saving money I earned from teaching and tutoring while in graduate school. I have taught mostly at the university level, but also have 3 years experience mentoring children through Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Santa Cruz. As a Big Brother I had a wide range of responsibilities which often included encouraging my Little Brothers' interest in academics and working with them on specific subjects. I enjoy working with young learners and have successfully tutored in that capacity.
