About Alexandra

I'm currently a PhD student at Albany Medical College studying neuroscience. I graduated in 2014 with my bachelors of science from SUNY Albany with a major in human biology. Prior to that I attended Albany College of Pharmacy for two years studying pharmacology. I started tutoring biology to students while I was in high school as well as chemistry, reading, and writing. In college I tutored physics, biology, organic chemistry and scientific writing. In graduate school I have tutored biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, and genetics. I also have some teaching experience while I've been in grad school. I've taught pharmacology to Physician Assistant students and will be a Teaching Assistant for the graduate level neuroanatomy course this fall and will teach a lecture in cellular/molecular neuroscience to younger graduate students.

I absolutely love teaching and tutoring! I've had a passion for teaching since very early on that has carried with me throughout my career. Part of my plan after I graduate with my PhD is to become a professor of neuroscience at a 4-year university. Tutoring is especially enjoyable for me because you get to know the student individually and keep updated on their progress. I truly believe that I can make any difficult subject very easy for any person to understand, no matter their background. Every student I have tutored thus far has improved their grades and have also learned many useful studying techniques from me. I have no doubt that I can be one of the best tutors you will ever have!

Most of my scientific experience lies in basic life sciences. I have the most experience with biology, biochemistry, cell biology and genetics. My undergrad degree was an anthropology degree combined with biology so I have a more well rounded knowledge of not only biology, but human history and their engagement with science. I have the most extensive knowledge when it comes to neuroscience, and know practically every aspect of the brain that you could imagine! I did perform well in chemistry as well in undergrad including general chemistry and organic chemistry.

Please contact me if you have any questions about my experience, knowledge, expertise, or if you'd like to schedule a lesson from me! I have fairly flexible nighttime and weekend hours and am willing to make lesson scheduling as easy as possible for the both of us. I am a very enthusiastic tutor, don't be shy!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I'm qualified to tutor in this subject because I completed my bachelors in Anthropology/Human Biology in 2014 from SUNY Albany. I graduated with a 3.8 GPA with this degree and passed all required courses with a B+ or higher. Along with required courses, I also completed a few upper level courses in Anthropology.

I took statistics in my freshman year of college and took Biostatistics in graduate school last year. I received an A in the course and have utilized this information daily since then. Using biostatistics is required for analyzing all the data I acquire from the research I do.

In college I took 2 semesters of genetics courses including intro to genetics and an advanced course in genetics of human disease. The rest of my biology courses incorporated genetics as well. In grad school, I took genetics with the medical students and am currently conduction research that is heavily genetics based.

Organic Chemistry

I took organic chemistry twice; once at pharmacy school and again at a state university. Both experiences were entirely different and has helped me to have a unique perspective on organic chemistry. I received near perfect scores in Orgo I and an A in Orgo II. I have tutored college students in the past for this course.

I spent my first to years of college studying pharmacology at a pharmacy university. Prior to that I also worked in a pharmacy for 5 years where I gained a lot of knowledge on how pharmaceutical prescripts affect the body. I am currently studying neuropharmacology and have taken numerous pharmacology courses. I am also a graduate teaching assistant in the physician assistant pharmacology course here at my medical school.

Public Speaking

My entire life I have never had an issue with speaking in large groups of people. My first exposure to this was my sophomore through senior year of high school where I was the president of many extracurricular clubs. Namely, the Interact club which required me to not only host weekly meetings with a group of >100 students, but also required me to talk at the local Rotary club meetings which contained numerous members of the community. In college I took two semesters of an intensive public speaking course of which I received an A. Since I have been in grad school for my PhD, I have been required to give much larger talks and presentations to diverse groups of students and scientists all over the world. Also, I have begun teaching numerous courses to class sizes of 200+ at a local medical school. I am extremely confident in my presentation skills and can easily pass on my knowledge to help others!

Study Skills

Since I have spent a total of 7 years in college and grad school, I have developed numerous effective study skills. My study skills are especially useful in high intensity degree programs such as pre-med, biochemistry, biology, etc. I currently mentor through the New York Academy of Sciences helping high school STEM students and am also a mentor at my graduate school where I help incoming freshman with study techniques and tutoring.
