About Lisa

I currently hold a 7-12 NYS English Certificate and a Professional NYS 5-12 Literacy Certificate. My teaching experiences have focused on creating a child-centered learning environment that fosters creative and critical thinking skills by facilitating instruction aligned closely with the Common Core Standards. The majority of my years have been spent working with students who have reading difficulties and those who struggle both academically and behaviorally. However, I have also had the opportunity to work with Advanced and Honor students providing me with a vast amount of tiered experiences to draw from when creating lessons. Most recently, I have been responsible for data analysis and tracking the reading comprehension specific skills strengths and weaknesses for each student. I then provide this data to the core teachers as well as provide individualized reading and writing strategies to ensure the best possible student success. I also utilize it myself for Data Driven Instruction, which facilitates the planning of instruction that is more individualized in regards to ability and skill for each student.

Prior to my most recent experience, the previous position provided me the opportunity to work in an urban High School atmosphere. I feel that, along with improving the understanding of literary concepts, writing and usage skills, life lessons and social responsibilities were also conveyed through the use of open class discussions as well as writing opportunities that allowed the students to voice their individual opinions and fostered critical thinking due to the meaningful connections the students were able to form. Students were and are expected to delve deeper than the literal level of material and explore the thematic connections to real life which in turn aids in their ability to improve their reading comprehension skills thus better preparing them for not only the state tests but for post-secondary education.

My firm belief is that students will walk away from my class as independent thinkers able to express these thoughts proficiently both through oral and written expression. In addition, students will have a clear understanding of how both fiction and non-fiction texts should be analyzed in regards to both scholarly and real-life settings. Differentiating the skills specific for each student as well as providing instruction and materials at the student’s reading level fosters a more successful learning experience. Thus, the student will feel more confident in their ability and will be willing to take more risks when meeting challenging materials.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Special Needs

As a middle grades and high school literacy specialist, many of the students I worked with both in small and large group sessions were and are students classified as special needs. The course requirements for my Master's degree included classes focusing on the various learning disabilities as well as emotional and physical disabilities that a Reading Specialist could come across within their class and the multiple strategies a teacher could utilize to help the student be successful. I currently hold a 7-12 NYS English Certificate and a Professional NYS 5-12 Literacy Certificate.
