Manhattan College (Mathematics Educatio)
SUNY Albany (Master's)
Hello! My name is Erin, and I am currently studying at SUNY Albany for a PhD in Biostatistics. My undergraduate degree was at Manhattan College in the field of math education. I have two years of teaching experience, and I love working with students to get them to that AHA! moment where they truly understand the math and are not just memorizing for a test. My first year of teaching was actually in China where I taught high school Chinese students in geometry and precalculus. When I returned to America after that one-year commitment, I got a job teaching 7th and 8th grade math. I love working with all ages and my goal with every student is to not only help them understand math but to also develop a liking for it!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
During my student teaching in the Bronx, I taught Algebra 1 and 2. My students responded well and liked that I focused more on understanding the material than just memorizing formulas.
I also personally tutored one student previously whose weekly quiz scores improved week by week in this subject.
While student teaching in the Bronx, I worked for an after school program where we worked with an individual student on their math. I was paired with a student who was taking Algebra 2/Trig. I worked with him for 2 hours a week and what helped him was that we went back to the basic parts of algebra from the beginning of the year. He had not understood them when taught in the beginning of the year and that affected his understanding of the following chapters throughout the year. I found that focusing on building up from the basic principles really helped him succeed in math for the rest of the year.
