About Cooper

Everyone deserves the chance to do their absolute best. I used to struggle with writing and math, but with the right guidance I graduated summa cum laude from Hamilton College with a major in English and a minor in math. I know how powerful individual help can be, and as someone who has been a passionate lover of learning and a dedicated tutor, I am happiest when I can offer that kind of assistance to others.

I specialize in writing, math, and tests such as the SAT, ACT, Regents, and GRE. I have over two years of experience as a private math tutor and writing tutor for my peers at Hamilton College, as well as one year of experience as a tutor for middle school students in all subjects. Furthermore, through my semester of graduate training and student teaching, I am well-versed in the Common Core State Standards. I have conducted 100 hours of field experience in high school classrooms in addition to teaching my own 5-week unit in two 11th-grade English classrooms.

I am also experienced in foreign language education; I am happy to offer my services in Spanish, French, or Chinese. I also offer ESL tutoring, no matter what your native tongue! I have over a year of experience working with all ages as an ESL tutor for refugees in both Utica and Rochester. I also attended the intensive Associated Colleges in China K12 Language Teachers Institute, where I learned many advanced methods of language acquisition for K12 students.

I like to find out what is important to the student, and use that interest as the basis for how we engage the material. Just as adults are more productive when they enjoy their jobs, students learn more easily when they see how the material relates to their own lives.

I also employ a diagnostic approach, using formative assessments to guide my practice. If something isn't helping, we toss it out and try something else - everything I do is aimed at achieving the student's ultimate goal.

Students can meet with me in their own homes or in a location of their choosing, so long as it allows the student to stay focused and feel comfortable.

I can't wait to help you reach your learning goals. Hope to hear from you soon!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chinese

I studied Chinese for two years in the competitive Hamilton College program under Hong Gang Jin. I attended the Associated Colleges in China K12 Language Teachers Institute, where I learned a number of language teaching methods and enhanced my understanding of Chinese language and culture.

ESL/ESOL

I have an excellent grasp of the English language through my degree in English literature and classwork in linguistics. Also, I have studied four different foreign languages (Spanish, French, Chinese, and Japanese), so I am very familiar with the process of acquiring a new grammar, pronunciation, writing style, and way of seeing the world.

I have over a year's worth of experience teaching English to refugees of many different nationalities and native tongues. I developed a wide array of teaching techniques through the K12 Language Teacher Institute in Beijing, China.

French

I earned a perfect score on the French Regents exam, studied French in college, and studied in Paris through the IES Abroad Program.

Logic

I studied symbolic logic for two semesters at Hamilton College. In my second semester, I completed an independent study with my professor, in which we explored advanced metalogics.

Regents

As a student of the New York State public school system, I have taken the Regents exams in English, French, Spanish, global history, US history, earth science, biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics. Through my graduate education and student teaching experience, I have become familiar with the Common Core, which has recently begun to influence the Regents exams. While student teaching, I prepared two classes of 11th-grade students for the Regents exam in English while teaching a unit on Of Mice and Men.

SAT Math

I graduated at the top of my high school class in mathematics and earned a minor in math at Hamilton College. I have completed the study point SAT Tutor training and have tutored math to middle school, high school, and college students. My SAT Math Score: 750.

SAT Reading

I graduated from Hamilton College with a degree in English literature and have one semester of graduate education at the University of Rochester in English education. I was a writing tutor for two years at Hamilton, where I helped hundreds of my peers with papers on virtually every subject. SAT Reading Score: 760.

SAT Writing

I graduated from Hamilton College with a degree in English literature and have one semester of graduate education at the University of Rochester in English education. I was a writing tutor for two years at Hamilton, where I helped hundreds of my peers with papers on virtually every subject. SAT Writing Score: 710.

Spanish

I have a total of 7 years education in the Spanish language, taking such college courses as Exploring Hispanic Texts and Advanced Grammar and Composition. I have been exposed to a variety of accents and dialects, so I can adjust to the needs of any student.

Writing

I graduated from Hamilton College with a degree in English literature and have one semester of graduate education at the University of Rochester in English education. My undergraduate thesis received departmental honors and I am currently editing it for publication.

I was a writing tutor for two years at Hamilton, where I helped hundreds of my peers with papers on virtually every subject. I see writing as a collaborative process where the student and tutor engage in a dialogue to hone his or her ideas and present them as effectively as possible.
