I have been interested in sign language ever since I was in college. I attended California State University, Northridge, learning not only about sign language but also deaf history and culture. I pursued a degree to become a teacher, getting my Master's in Deaf Education from Hunter College. For the past ten years, I have been working as a teacher for the deaf in Connecticut, Vermont and New York. This has included teaching sign language in the home and in the classroom for both adults and children.
My goal for teaching sign langauge is to make learning sign language fun. Sign language is a wonderfully visual and expressive language. It uses not only the hands but also the face and body to show emotions and context. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a degree in Liberal Arts and have been teaching American History to both middle school and high school students in Vermont. I am currently perusing certification to teach Social Studies in New York state. I teach the the curriculum of the student depending on age and grade. I also teach to a specific exam, such as AP or Regents.
I have been a certified teacher of the deaf for the past 13 years, working in Connecticut, Vermont and New York. I have taught multiple subjects withe students from elementary to high school. I am also proficient in American Sign Language.
