Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I earned my Master's degree in Secondary Special Education and taught Special Education in Brooklyn, NY in the public school system. I wrote my thesis on motivating and engaging students with characteristics of ADHD and conducted research on a particular group of students in order to adapt my teaching style to meet their individual education needs.

Autism

I earned my Master's degree in Secondary Special Education and taught Special Education in Brooklyn, NY for four years. I have worked with several students under the autism spectrum within ICT and self contained classroom settings, and have continuously adapted the curriculum to their educational and behavioral needs. For the past two years, I have taught a summer school class of middle schoool and high school aged children classified within the autism spectrum, specifically Asperger's Syndrome.

English

English, with a focus on creative writing, was a minor concentration and passion of mine as an undergraduate at UConn. Pending passing the New York State ELA-CST, I will be certified to teach English Language Arts, grades 7-12, in addition to my multi-subject certification, grades 5-9.

Proofreading

Proofreading and teaching others how to edit their own work has always been a strength of mine. I continuously practice revising my own work and help others to do the same both as a tutor and a peer in a local writing group. I currently tutor students of all ages in proofreading, from re-configuring elementary-level sentence structure to revising college-level essays.

Reading

I am currently enrolled in an associate-level Orton-Gillingham reading specialist program. Orton-Gillingham is the method most successful reading programs are based off of. I teach using the OG lesson structure, adapted according to my students' reading levels and needs.

Social Studies

I have co-taught and individually taught Social Studies in both ICT and self-contained classroom settings; specifically middle school and high school level content. I also specialize in visual aids and accommodations for study skills in my private tutoring practice and in my resource room at the school I work in. I have worked with students with LD classifications, who struggle with organization and study skills, for eight years now.

Special Needs

I earned my Master's degree in Secondary Special Education and taught Special Education in Brooklyn, NY in the public school system. I worked with several students under the autism spectrum and with diagnosed learning and behavioral disabilities. I have continuously adapted various curriculums to meet all of my students' educational and behavioral needs.

Writing

I studied creative writing as a minor concentration under by business marketing degree at UConn. I have extensive experience writing both academically and creatively, especially after successfully completing my thesis research in graduate school. I taught secondary writing as a teacher in the NYC public school system for four years, and am also seasoned in teaching how to write both short and extended responses to state test questions.

Great Tutor

Anna was a pleasure to have in our house and always arrived on time and with a smile. My daughter really latched onto her from day one, and really enjoyed the time she had with Anna. Even though it was for just a short period I think my daughter got a lot out of her sessions and I would have no hesitation on recommending Anna to any of our friends with kids.
