About Shirlina

Bio

Having a teen son with Asperger's Syndrome I have learned various ways to tutor. Understanding a child's learning style and teaching in that manner, even if it is "outside of the norm", allows children to grasp different concepts at their own level. Also, it teaches the child how to process in various ways, allowing them to find the method that is best suited for any future school or life challenges.

I have an Associates degree from the University of Phoenix with a concentration in Psychology. I currently hold a senior standing at the University of Nevada, Reno with a major in Psychology and a minor in Philosophy. Originally I was an Electrical Engineering major, but when my son was diagnosed as High Functioning Autistic, I realized that my passion was within him.

Previous job positions include: certified 911 Medical Dispatcher, certified EMT, and various management positions.

I currently hold an Associates of Liberal Studies Degree and I am in my senior year at the University of Nevada Reno completing my Bachelors of Psychology. I am a tutor in the Early Childhood Autism Program, working in every educational realm with special needs children. I carry a minimum of 30+ hours of basic education ranging from English and History, to Math and Science. I have tutored children from the age of 6 to adults (college students). Most of my experience comes from tutoring my high-functioning Autistic son who is now 11. I will be applying for my Nevada substitute teaching certification this July. I believe that my experience in tutoring both special needs and non-special needs children with my current education will allow me to have a head start with WyzAnt students.

Having been in school for as long as I have (long-term college student), I have experienced and learned various forms of study skills. Also, having a child with Asperger's Syndrome, it has helped me to think outside of the box while helping his mind to comprehend the different forms of studying. I use various methods depending on the child's most effective way of learning. Some work best with rehearsal or rote learning (memorization skills) while others can use a PQRST method through reading and listening. Many use cues with flash cards or keywords and others, acronyms and mnemonics. The key is to question, test, and tap into the best learning method for each individual child. One thing I do stress in all sittings in time management and organization. These are keys to learning successes all around.
