I am retired from teaching resource in California. I love helping students learn to read and I am good at it. My favorite thing about tutoring? The kids, of course, and seeing them learn. Seeing eyes light up when a child "gets it." Seeing the self esteem go up too.
I was trained in a unique program through UC Berkeley. We learned to plan lessons at just the right level for the student after close analysis of their reading style. These lessons coach the child to notice and use the meaning, the grammar and phonics cues that every text provides.
I have used this technique of "coaching" reading for many years and with very good success. The goal is for the students to internalize the "cues" and use them when reading on their own.
I have lots of experience teaching elementary and middle school children in all areas, having worked as a Resource teacher for 20 years. I love children and love seeing them learn . I love planning lessons that are fun, engaging and work.
I believe the biggest motivator is when a student feels that they are progressing.
Phonics is key for word reading. I give phonics instruction at all levels from sounds to chunks of words to multi-syllable word rules.
If you want to move your reading and get un-stuck, I feel I can really help you. I'd like to try!

Sue is an incredible teacher! She came prepared with so many great ideas, and contingency plans. She was able to find the perfect balance between allowing my son freedom to feel comfortable and interested and energetic while simultaneously keeping him on track. She is efficient, professional, dedicated, and very kind. I look forward to a long future working with Sue!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I worked for many years with emergent readers at first through eighth grade in both elementary and middle schools. I am trained in the Jane Greene Language program and have done training with Lindamood-Bell as well.
I have a reading certificate from the University of CA in Berkeley. I have tutored many students with a method where I carefully analyze their strengths and needs and then "coach " them with prompts to look at reading strategies that can help. The idea is that they then internalize these strategies which help them improve their reading as they read.
As a resource teacher in middle school, I taught study skills daily. One of the most important skills was use of a planner to track assignment completion. Another important skill that I taught was taking large assignments and breaking them into smaller parts.
