Beloit College (Anthropology and Modern Languages)
Hi! I'm a graduate of Beloit College. I received my B.A. with a double major in Anthropology and Modern Languages and Literatures, with a focus on Spanish and Russian. I was dual-enrolled in both UNR and TMCC in high school, where I began my studies in Russian and Anthropology. During my undergraduate career, I studied abroad in Cuba, where I lived with a host family.
I have been a tutor for 5 years, in English, Spanish, proofreading, and organization, as my students’ needs have shifted. I have tutored both individually and in small groups, for middle and high school as well as college levels. For me, the great appeal of tutoring is the moment when my students “get” a concept and are able to successfully apply it on their own. The goal of my tutoring is to help them reach this point.
With more than 5 years of language tutoring, I feel confident that I am able to help students improve their language skills. I volunteered with the VITA program of the IRS for three years, translating and interpreting between English and Spanish to assist low-income families in preparing and filing their taxes. I have worked with the Northern Nevada International Center in the past as a teacher’s aide in after-school Spanish classes in Washoe County. I have received certification in Spanish Medical Interpretation, Legal Interpretation, and General Translation through TMCC’s Workforce Development Program. I have spoken Spanish since age 5, with 10 years of formal instruction in high school and college. I have taken 5 years of Russian classes at TMCC and Beloit College.
I am a native English speaker with experience editing and proofreading, as well as helping others organize their thoughts into a polished, cohesive product. Tutoring with the AVID program at Sparks High School gave me the opportunity to help students complete challenging assignments and improve their vocabulary. I am a voracious reader with an interest in linguistics, which has helped me to better understand my own native language.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions about my knowledge, particular tutoring abilities and interests, or anything else! I would love to set up a tutoring appointment with you. Hi! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
