About Richard

My Master's degree is in English with a concentration in creative writing from San Francisco State University.

I worked as an English instructor at Truckee Meadows Community College from 2005 to 2010. I've taught English 101 and 102 (the two English classes required for graduation or transfer to a four-year college). In 101, we concentrated on writing four types of essays: personal, expository, argumentative, and analytical. In 102, we concentrated on analytical essays based on works of literature. Two of my English 101 students went on to write for the college newspaper, THE ECHO. One of my English 101 students won the Meadow Non-Fiction Award in the college literary magazine, THE MEADOW. Students from my 101 class regularly sign up for my 102 class the following semester.

I've had short stories and articles published, and written two novels. My novel was published in January, 2012.

I've tutored in the Writing Center at TMCC and students regularly returned specifically to me for help because their essays went up by one or two grades after my help.

If you're a college student needing help with how to write essays, interpret literature, or write your own stories or articles, I can help. If you're either a high school or junior high school student wanting to do better in your classes now and do well in college later, contact me. In addition to teaching writing skills, I also know the basics of speed reading and can help students with reading speed and comprehension.

In addition to my Master's degree in English and creative writing, I also have a TEFL Certificate (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) and taught English as a foreign language at Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno, and at the London School in Saigon, Vietnam.

Every student can improve, given the proper instruction and attention. Feel free to contact me with any questions about your particular needs.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

Although I have a Master's degree in English with a concentration in creative writing from San Francisco State University, I also earned a TEFL Certificate (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) from English International in San Francisco. I taught English to Vietnamese students at the London School in Saigon, Vietnam. More recently I taught an ESL class at Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno, Nevada, where I have been an English instructor since 2004. The main courses I teach there are English 101 and 102, the two English classes all students must take and pass in order to graduate and transfer to a four-year college.

I've lived and worked in Vietnam twice, visited Hong Kong twice, lived in London, England for nine months, and lived in San Francisco for 18 years. These experiences have put me in touch with a wide diversity of people from many different backgrounds and nationalities. Compared to the average American, I have an easier time understanding a foreign student who speaks with an accent, and most students find that I am easier to understand than some other teachers they have listened to in classes.
