Hi, I'm Mia. As a recently accepted Columbia University Masters student in Neuroscience & Education with a B.A. in Philosophy/History of Science, a former classroom teacher, tutor, and college academic assistant in Ptolemaic Mathematics, Biology, Greek, and Essay Writing, I am enthusiastic about tutoring a variety of subject areas! I have a cross-disciplinary background with many expertise and am a certified K-8 teacher. I choose to tutor because I am a lifelong learner, and helping students achieve their goals brings me a ton of joy!

I focus on three primary target areas to achieve academic excellence:
1. Motivation and confidence through well-documented success in learning theory such as growth-mindset, multiple intelligence theory, scaffolding, and frequent positive feedback.
2. Attention to student zone of proximal development in order to tailor challenges where individually needed.
3. Develop project-based learning that maximizes on interest and background knowledge.

My strengths include a clear focus on critically engaging, student-centered learning. I use a differentiated, individualized approach to meet your needs. Additionally, I generally believe that even with perfect qualifications, a good fit is the key to success. This means that I may or may not be the best fit for you or your student. That's why we have the first session - to see if we are a good match. If your needs are best met by a different tutoring style, I encourage you to find that person. My number one concern is finding the best learning environment for you or your student as this will produce the most positive outcomes!

I have experience in both philosophical and literary essay writing, and attended an intensive summer writing program at Columbia University. With over six years of combined tutoring, teaching, and editing, I have a broad and extensive background in English and Writing. Additionally, as a teacher at a very diverse school in New Mexico, I worked with students who were ESL. In order to best meet the needs of our ESL community, I received GLAD (Guided Language Acquisition Design) training to design curriculum for English as a Second Language Learners.

Additionally, I have three years of experience working with elementary students on Common Core Mathematics. Depending on the area of weakness, I make it a point to start by analyzing student needs using a combination of online diagnostic tests and compiled Common Core teaching resources. This helps me to place students in small groups according to individual levels. I adapt my teaching to student needs; instruction and questions are phrased in ways that help students process the information clearly, and affect greater retention and future independence.

Please reach out with any questions, comments, or concerns and I will respond within hours! Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks! Mia

ESL/ESOL

As a former 5th grader English Language Arts Teacher in New Mexico, I have taught many ESL students whose first language is Spanish. I love working with ESL and strive to support their English language learning by providing individual, relevant material that engages and supports students. I am also trained in ESL teaching methods such as Guided Language Acquisition Design and have a variety of methods to improve English skills rapidly.

As a 5th grade teacher, I frequently met with students individually as well as in small groups of 3-5 to target specific subject areas. I focused on individualized learning plans for students who were behind as my biggest goal was to get them on grade level. I also held after-school tutoring in reading comprehension, writing, and math. As a college academic assistant I held office hours to help students write essays, offer extra tutoring in math, biology, and greek translation. My teaching style is very student-centered, meeting students where they are and working towards success from there.

BEST tutor you could ask for!!

Mia is the most caring and dedicated tutor. She has been more than helpful and has gone above and beyond with both assignments she has helped me with. She works with my schedule and adapts to the (at times) last minute assignments that a college student undertakes. Mia is patient and understanding but also gives back helpful criticism that has greatly improved my papers. She is very knowledgeable and educated regarding philosophy as well as overall writing technique. I will definitely be asking Mia for more help in the future! I am lucky to have found this tutor!

Teresa, 1 lesson with Mia

Very knowledgable, very kind and patient

I like how she breaks concepts down so that I can understand. She makes the lesson fly by, she's very funny, yet very focused and you get a lot done. I am very glad I chose her, I wouldn't have passed my midterm without her.
