About John

I have a Bachelor’s degree in Physics with a strong background in chemistry. It is said that the language of physics is math, and as such I have a deep understanding of math. I also have a basic grasp of several different philosophies. I have worked for the past nine years in a chemistry lab. Some of my responsibilities at work include setting up different instruments and prepping samples to be analyzed that day.

I was a teacher’s assistant (TA) in college, and taught both the calculus-based and non-calculus physics lab to undergraduates. This included a short topic-based lesson and a how-to on setting up and conducting the experiment of the week. I also had to set up the requirements for passing the lab and grade the labs and lab participation. I also helped a 4th-grade teacher with science-based lessons for a semester, this included demonstrations and weekly lessons. I think one of my strengths as a teacher is finding a way of relating the material to the student.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
