I have a professional certification for Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL)/English as a Second Language (ESL) from the TEFL Institute, Chicago, Ill. In 2010, I taught ESL for two semesters in the Adult Education Program, University of New Mexico, Valencia Campus, as a volunteer. My students were all immigrants from Mexico. While working in the program, I specialized in tutoring four to six intermediate level students at a time, in reading, writing and speaking. From that experience, I discovered that face to face tutoring was the most satisfying experience for me, as opposed to traditional classroom teaching.
After leaving New Mexico, I tutored adults in Pedasi, Republic of Panama', in 2011, 2012 and 2013. There I assisted Panamanian students with their English homework and even helped several professional men and women improve their English skills. I held classes twice per week in our home. As in New Mexico, I tutored four to six students at a time.
I am presently living in Reno, NV, USA, where I just finished working in the "Read and Succeed" summer program as a volunteer English teacher with the Washoe County School District. There, I tutored 5th graders in reading and writing. I am now working evenings as an ESL instructor for the Northern Nevada Literacy Council. My days are free and I would like to continue tutoring individuals and small groups in reading and writing. I have a professional certification for Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL)/English as a Second Language
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I love the English language and love to discern and explain the techniques that an author uses to tell the story or make the point. The student needs to understand the purpose of the writing, the message the author is trying to send and how the author is using the language to send that message. From reading and understanding the writings of others, we develop our own style and better become able to, "say/write what we mean and mean what we say/write."
