I have been a licensed substitute teacher and personal tutor for over 10 years. Results and feedback from parents about their children's progress have been very positive. Parents often recommend me to other families with students who need just a bit of extra help to succeed.
Student success is my goal, achieved because I am a patient and caring teacher and listener. I believe my strong point is to convert difficult concepts or language into easy to understand ones. I like to draw comparisons to everyday life and make connections with things the student may be familiar with.
I have taught the following for a number of years:
English to Language Learners, adults and elementary students, who are originally Spanish speakers
Math and sciences to elementary students and high school students, including GRE candidates
Social sciences to elementary students
Language arts to GRE candidates, elementary, high school students, and adults.
You might ask why both math/sciences and language arts. Mainly through coursework, retraining, and holding positions in all these areas. For example, I have held a position as Editorial Associate in marine sciences for 10+ years, which blended my science knowledge with writing and editing skills (developed through copy-editing and writing articles for a Manhattan publishing house).
Teaching ELL for adults at our local community college gave me another new experience, in which I learned to bring together parallel concepts and language similarities to help cognition. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have over 7 years as a certified substitute teacher and experienced tutor I taught daily and weekly course schedules, including elementary math, social studies, science, geography, writing, spelling, and language arts.
Over 10 years' experience teaching and tutoring English, English Language Learners, reading and writing. I am a former editor and writer and continue tutoring students in these subjects with much success. I personalize my learning plans to meet the needs of all students who I tutor, with experience in all levels of abilities.
