About Elizabeth

As a teacher of children ages five to ten for the past 25 years, I am particularly qualified
to be a tutor. I have worked in school systems in Wisconsin, Ohio, and Nevada. An artist
at heart, I approach learning from a holistic, balanced view. I consider the child's particular
strengths and use them to enable the students to achieve and find successful.

I have worked with special education students, been a School Counselor, and am sensitive
and caring of students needs for support and encouragement. I believe a happy
child is a successful child and so I strive to be happy and upbeat in the work with my
students. I can teach reading, writing, vocabulary development, fluency in reading
and reading comprehension. I also can teach science, and social studies.

My methods are often hands-on, (manipulatives for Math), visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. I use a variety of methods in order to best serve the student since all students are not visual
learners.

Please consider me for your child's tutoring needs. I will do my best to increase you child's skills.

Thank you,

Elizabeth J., M.Ed.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Dyslexia

Children who are considered Special Ed. often reverse their letters when reading. I am trained in how to teach these kids to read using auditory and kinesthetic methods. They will often read was for saw. I make a tachistascope for them which allows them to only see the one word they are reading. It trains the eye to see one word at a time and thus the child focuses only on that word. Once the accuracy of one word at a time increases we then go to two word sized tool. Eventually the opening on the tool allows for the child to read an entire phrase at once which will then increase the flow of their reading. There are several other methods of working with children with Dyslexia. It really depends upon the child and his/her facility with reading the printed word as it appears.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught K-4th for more than 22 years as a classroom teacher. I have a State License to teach and counsel and substitute that is secure until September 30, 2014.
