My name is Melissa and I have been teaching elementary-aged students for the past 7 years. I have worked with students from grades kindergarten to six, but the majority of my experience is in the primary grades (K-2). I am currently a first grade teacher for the district and have done after school tutoring though a company and with a few of my students. While I love teaching my entire class, my favorite time of the day is when I get to work one-on-one with my students or in a small group. I enjoy making learning fun for my students, but also maintain high, yet attainable, expectations for all my students.
I have a bachelor's degree in elementary education. I also have my master's degree in elementary reading and mathematics. I have a comprehensive understanding of the common core math standards and always attempt to relate math lessons to applied skills.
I have a thorough understanding of teaching phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. I attempt to use materials of interest to the child(ren) I am working with to help keep them motivated and engaged.
The biggest difference between the common core standards and prior state standards are the application of standards and higher-level thinking. I have always pushed students to be actively involved in their education and to apply their knowledge to life skills.
I believe in differentiation and that with patience and the right mind-set every student is capable of great achievements. Not all students learn the same way, and that is okay. The trick for the teacher/tutor and the student is to find how they learn and why learning is important to them.
I hope that I have the opportunity to tutor your child in the future. I thoroughly enjoy working with children and it gives me great joy to see them succeed and that light bulb in their head to click on. I have a respectful and warm relationship with all of my students and I will always to do my best to help your child to find success and most importantly, enjoy learning. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught first grade using the common core standards for the previous five years. I have a thorough understanding of how the standards have been improved as compared to previous state standards. I hold a bachelors degree in elementary education. I recently received my masters degree in elementary mathematics and reading and my education was focused on effectively implementing to common core standards in both subject areas.
My first years teaching were spent working with small groups of struggling students in grades K-6. I have also taught first and second grade for five years, implementing the Indiana state standards and then changing over to the nationally-based common core standards. I have also worked with small groups in after-school tutoring for reading and mathematics.
I have taught first and second grade throughout my years teaching. I hold a bachelors and masters degree in elementary education in mathematics and reading. I also have done additional tutoring to help struggling students catch up and make additional academic gains.
