My teaching philosophy:

I believe in the importance of finding one's purpose as well as recognizing the obligation that's implicit with this discovery. I count myself very fortunate to have found meaning in both music and teaching and even more privileged to observe that the best way to teach and inspire is to be a student oneself. I love to teach - I love seeing my passion for music mirrored in my students. It is this outlook that serves as my model for guiding and mentoring students down this journey in life.

I view a student's well-being and progress not only as my job, but also as the obligation referred to above. It is always my goal to establish a positive learning environment, and by so doing express the importance of disciplined practice while always making it fun! As is stated above, I see myself as a student of music and always will. I am constantly delving into musical literature, whether its history, theory, or psychology of music. This always enables me to bring new things to the table when teaching and helps in making practical applications towards whatever music my students want to study.

I have 10 plus years of teaching experience with students of all ages, levels and abilities. Former students range from special needs clients (autism, PTSD, etc.) to professional and published songwriters. I currently serve on the faculty of both UNLV and Dixie State University in St. George Utah, perform and concertize professionally and have an active private studio of over 40 students.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ear Training

Having both an Bachelor's of music performance and a Master's of Applied Music Performance, ear training was a huge part of my collegiate training as we were put through a rigorous program using the fixed do system of solfege. My ear training was also put into practical application while I was working in Nashville as many artists would give their hired musicians recordings of songs as opposed to charts/sheet music and I had to figure out parts by ear.

General Music

Having a Bachelor's of Music Performance, Bachelor's in Music Business and a Master's of Applied Music Performance, general music knowledge was a huge part of my collegiate training and then in the real world as a working, professional musician. Subjects studied and passed at the university level include: Music Theory, music history, counterpoint, composition (classical and Jazz), conducting, and many others. My time in Nashville afforded me opportunities to put this knowledge into rock/pop/country music-in other words, in genres out side of academia and more accessible to a main-stream audience.

Guitar

I have both a B.M. in Guitar Performance and an M.M. in Applied guitar performance. I studied classical and jazz guitar formally for 5 plus years and worked as a live/studio musician in Nashville TN. So I have experience in many genres/styles. I also play other plucked string instruments (banjo, mandolin, bass, etc.).

Music History

Having both an Bachelor's of music performance and a Master's of Applied Music Performance, music history subjects were a huge part of my collegiate training. Specific subjects studied and passed at the university level include: all major time periods (Renaissance through 20th century/post modern music), score recognition of composers/form/time period, conducting and many others.
